I'm looking for ideas for a lift to remove my 4Runner top by myself. I have a hoist, just need the suggestions. Has to be a 1 man operation.

It is a one man operation.

Unbolt it. Climb underneath. Lift it up. Place it where you want it.

This is how I always do it.

My technique is very similar to these guys.
A hoist is cool, but will take a bit of work to get setup.
Go to Home Depot or Harbor Freight and get 4 cheap ratcheting straps. They don't need to be high-strength, the whole top is only ~150lbs or so.
Put some eye-hooks or bolts in your rafters, hook one end to that, let them droop. Then uset he other end to grab the Runner top.
This is where my setup differs form the others. My garage ceiling is low (7') so I need to be able to get around/walk under the suspended top. On the rear, I mounted some eye-hooks in teh top corners. You can ee them here:

Since i needed to get up real close, I actually slip the loop-end of the strap that is right by the ratchet and don't even use the hook, here's a close-up

You can't see it, but there's a 1/2" bolt going through that joist that the ratchet is attached to.

For the front end, right now I run a dowel through teh windows, and hook around that. Someday I'll probbaly put it eye hooks like in the back.

To get it up/off, just back in, line it up w/ the hooks. undo all the bolts. Now go around and ratchet up each corner 2" at a time, so you don't bend or flex the shell too much. Once high enough, drive out. Done in 10 minutes.
I think this is the same as on 4Crawler's site.

Question Reality.
