The word is Texan for "exact"... Meaning if the calipers are on the WRONG side of the vehicle the bleeder will NOT be exactly on the top and there is some AIR above the bleeder that CANNOT be squirted out! The ones that have been brought to me required 3 or 4 pumps to compress all the air... just like you describe. They come in a box marked "left" or "right" If they are backwards the problem exists ZACKLY as you describe.. Big JIm

I am by no means an expert but had an old chevy that had similar symptoms and it turned out to be a bad booster. Changed it and had great brakes again.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
1981 CJ7 - I have just done a complete brake job, replacing drums, piston, rear shoes, front pads, rotor, and calipers. Before the brake job I couldn't get a good pedal when bleeding the brakes and I still have the same problem. When I bleed the brakes there appears to be no air coming out of each wheel?
Does anyone know whether I just can't get all air out of the system or have a small hole somewhere in the system?
Please give your suggestions. I had a similar problem and a buddy suggested that my emergency brakes were not working allowing my rear shoes to pull in to far from the drums. We adjusted the E-brake cable and then I had no problem bleeding them. I might add I had replaced the complete system except for the proportioning valve.

I dunno about Harvey, but I am gonna double check mine to make sure to prevent this problem. My system is completely brand new except the proportion block. Thanks for the tip, Jim.

He either fixed it or is in the hospital from when he slid thru the stop sign (jeez, just joking, hope everything is ok!). I am pleased to report I managed to get my calipers on right, as I remember there really was no other way to put em on to make the hose work out too.

You Da Man Big Jim.
The previous owner had two left calipers on the jeep, which was part of the confusion. Switching the new rebuilt calipers to ensure the valves were allowed the brakes to bleed, but was different set-up than was previously on the brakes. In addition, the brake lines are now attached near the middle of the brakes--so the doesn't stretch and won't break. Back in the dirt tomorrow!!!
Thanks for all input!!!

Thanks Harvey... Sure took a while to get around to them calipers. Glad you (or someone) finally checked them. HMMM only one on the wrong side, huh? That's the first time I have had that problem occur... Seems like the guy that put it on there would have had some inkling that he had just created a new problem don't it.
