Body Damage is Cool
Been working on my bud's truck while he is in Europe.

Okay, so now that the laundry list of upgrades has been completed, I am working through everything and running tests on the components.

Here's what I've done.
Patient - 2000 Rodeo LSE, auto, LSD, 4.10.
Upgrades:
* 3" body lift
* 3" suspension lift
* steel braided brake lines
* Tera Lows in the t-case
* manual hubs
* sway bar disconnects

I think that about covers it.

I took it on a short drive to the other side of the neighborhood yesterday for a couple beads of weld, and tacking nuts onto plates for the bumpers.

I noticed that the tranny stayed in 2nd gear, but didnt think any more of it since I was below 25mph as I was in a neighborhood.
Tonight I again drove it in the neighborhood and engaged 4-lo (well, kinda, left the hubs in 4x2 mode so like 2-Lo). it wouldnt shift out of 2nd, and in lo range, kept speed limited to indicated 12mph (with error correction, ~15).

So something is preventing this from going into 3rd and 4th. Any ideas?
We supported the engine tranny on the tranny pan with the t-case out, so I dont see anything that we could have done to have caused this.
Perhaps the fluid is low?
Other than getting a pressure gauge and testing that, verifying any codes it is throwing (no CTL, CEL or other idiot lights), I am at a loss, I did borrow a FSM, and read through it, but not having any luck.

The other issue I noticed is something with the shifter.
it moves the linkage, and engages park fully. The lights on the gauge cluster indicate park. It allows removal of the key, and starts in that position, so you say; what's the problem?

Well... the brake shift interlock is the problem, I bumped the shift level into R from P while on the passenger side reaching across. (The e-brake was on and the engine was off) <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

SO. Those are the issues and I cant seem to resolve them.

FYI, he has had a replacement engine and rebuilt/replaced tranny in the past year/18 mos.

Please help, I need to resolve this ASAP so I can switch to getting my truck ready and packing up to head out for Moab.

Sounds like the tranny is in limp-mode...I guess I would check all electrical connections to the tranny first thing.

Not much help, but that's all I've got.

FWIW, I've heard nothing but bad out of the rebuilt 4L30-E trannies. The local guy here that owns Mr. Transmission says he won't deal with Jasper, Amoco or any other national rebuilders. He will do nothing but an Isuzu rebuild into any of the Isuzus.

He says 95% of the time that the "other" rebuilds come back in with problems.

Okay,

So after some GREAT advice from Jerry (he IS the MAN!!!), I found that the tranny doesnt appear to be suffering mechanically, but is ailing electronically.

He had me remove the trans selector plug, forward of the shifter linkage on the tranny.

I did this and was able to manually shift through the gears. Once I plugged it back in, I was stuck in the same situation as before with 1st and 2nd only.

What is this limp mode you speak of, and how do I reboot the TCM/ECM? I tried the unplugging of the battery and that didnt help. Clearing of codes stored, like at Auto Zone?

Thanks guys.

I'm a little hazy on the details of Limp-mode, as it has been several years since I had my old AT 99 Trooper, but IIRC it is sort of a "plan B" default mode the tranny will go into if the normal electronic controls are not working.

I don't know how to re-boot the ECM, or if it is even possible. Perhaps another phone call to Jerry?

Yeah, we think it is isolated to an electronic problem. Most likely culprit is the solenoid.

Im done playing amateur hour, Did my best, and emailed my buddy to make arrangements for it to go back to the shop and let a "pro" deal with it.

Just quite a coincidence that it fails like this while we are doing other work to it. Makes a guy wonder if it was something he did... But I didnt touch the tranny other than supporting it, and unbolting the tcase fro it.
Shoot... I even had the battery disconnected while doing the mods. :shrug:

Here's what it looks like now:
