It seems in good tune you should expect bout maybe 14/16 out of most wranglers.
I would suggest a 97 or newer six cylinder.. You prolly will, like most here, dislike a 4 banger.

And I have had numerous 4s all the way from flatties to fuel injected ones and I liked wm all.
BUT given a choice tomorrow I would opt for a 97 up six.. If for no other reason than freeways.

Body Damage is Cool
One previous four wheeling buddy had a TJ 4-cylinder: he, too, always said he like his Jeep. He was more than an average offroad driver, as well. He commonly confessed how hard he had to push his engine to keep-up with the others travelling on the I-70 over the mountains toMoab. Damn, if he didn't try just about every obstacle that came our way with his stock axles, 33 inch tires, rear axle lunch box locker and budget boost suspension lift.
Last trails we did together in Moab a few years ago caused him to reconsider some of the dangerous obstacles we'd been doing and goals he had in his personal life. I may have done the same if I hadn't easily climbed this near vertical 30 to 40 foot slickrock wall; he, on the otherhand, lost traction just as his front tires neared the top edge of the slickrock wall climb! He stayed on the gas pedal, tires chriping wildly, and made it over the top edge! White-knuckled? Yes!
Much later that day he made known just how much that particular climb had affected him. We both could have dropped 30 to 40 feet in our Jeeps. But we didn't. He sold his Jeep several weeks later.

Let me just say this-if you are looking for decent fuel mileage, I don't think a Jeep is for you. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

'98 TJ, 4 cyl., auto
31" AT KO's on rockcrawlers,

2" Teraflex lift, no top,

You want fuel economy?

YJ wrangler 258 I6 Swap in a better tranny/tcase. lift, tires, gears.

Then go buy an early 90's honda something or other to drive daily.

1994 Isuzu Amigo XS -Sold
1972/3 CJ5 Glass body, 5" lift 34's. 5 years of work coming to an end.

Of course I have driven then both many times... That said I prefer the 4 cyl under 50 mph around town..
However at 52 mph I WANT a six cylinder.
The gas milage I have wittnessed is about equal. I do not remember getting better milage with a 4 banger than the six...ever!

My Heep is the 2.5 4-banger and that thing is a PIG...both on gas and in speed. I know, I know...it's a Jeep...not meant for speed. But man, you have to HAMMER it just to keep up with traffic, especially from a red light. I personally don't care about the abuse, as long as it lasts me 2 more years of college!!! Hell though, the power is PATHETIC.

Honest to God, my 88 Ranger STX 4x4 (EVEN when it was STOCK) would walk ALL over my Jeep in the woods in power AND 4x4 prowess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Long story short, get the 4.0!!!
