Howdi all. I've got a 1982 diesel dual cab yota and I would like to fit larger rims/tyres.

I looked up the axle code (G142) which equates to a 8" 2 pinion diff with 4.875 gear ratio. My question is do you guys think I could run anything bigger than 31 x 10.5 R15's without having an undrivable slug. Keep in mind that it is a 2L diesel with about 3/4 the HP of your 22R/RE's.

At the moment I have little 215 R16 cheese cutter tyres on (my 31x10.5's in my sig were slick and I got these for free) and I get stuck in anything deeper than 2".

What is the stock tire size for a diesel? The 4.87 gear ration here in the state's was for auto's with 31's. If teh stock tires size for deisel and 4.87's was 28's, it is unlikely you would want to run anything bigger than the 31's you have been running. If diesel isn't cheaper than gasoline, you might consider swapping in a 22r, you could then run 33's(w/o a susp. lift), and have 28's and 4.10's performace and mileage, though w/o the torque ft's you now have with the deisel.

Are there HP mods you can do for the Toy diesel, i.e., turbo's, propane injection etc. If you can bump the performance to better match the tires, you could probably run bigger tires. You could also regear to 5.29's.

Thanks for the input guys. I might just stick with the 31x10.5r15's and just air down to 15psi or so on sand.

Or I might combine my love of Fords and Yotas and shove a 351ci Cleveland in her <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />

The way sand sucks power, I would stick with the 31x10.5 for sure. You need to air down no matter what tire size you have anyway. I run my 33x9.50 BFG AT's in the sand at 10-12psi and they do a nice job.

Sand is a lot like snow, you should air down to below 10psi, probably closer to 5 psi. You want as alarge of a contact patch you can get, so the lower the psi you can go, the better traction you can achieve.

Even if you do shoe-horn in a 351, you would still need to lower the tire pressure.
