in the shop, we used some type of acid. my friend was sayin that it was the same type they used to get nail pollish off of clients at work. i cant remember exactly what its called though.

Try Acetone. Not sure if I spelled it correctly.

Easy-Off oven cleaner. use it to clean the carbon off any and all mechanical parts. i got some zep industrial purple once, stuff cleans pretty much anything really well, but didnt get all the carbon off alot of the parts i cleaned during the rebuild. easy off melted it right off. i swear by it now

The best and cheapest is to take all your parts to an automotive machine shop and have everything put into a hot tank. Everything comes out spotless. By the time you pay for oven cleaner or whatever you use and ruin your manicure and your time give the machine shop supervisor 20 bucks in the palm and be done with it.

Just realized what your doing (pistons still in block). I'd use acetone and a brass brush.

Throttle body cleaner not carb cleaner will do it instantly with no scrubbing. It dries fast though so if the liquid gets around the pistons and int the rings, it may transfer the carbon into the rings and harden around them. It leaves a carbon "sap" behind if you don't wipe it up while it is wet.
It works great for throttle bodies, but maybe it isnt so good for pistons while they are in the engine. I used a metal scraper, and a bunch of cleaners, I just use the throttle body cleaner in the intake manifold. Amazing stuff, though.

Thats it. ya, if you use it, be careful not to get to much of it on your hands or clothes. you'll smell like it for a good week or two. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

carb cleaner, doesnt really do anything to hard carbon I dont really know ehat it is for, but it removes grease OK.

Oh btw, acetone is not an acid, like sulfuric or nitric, it is a ketone type of solvent.
