Can anyone tell me the difference between these two diesel engines, besides the displacement. I know the 4JB is 2.8 liters and the 4JG is 3.1 liters (I'm told and have read), but are the two blocks the same, but different displacement? Will the same transmissions bolt up? Etc? Just what is the difference?

Thanks,
Richard

As best as I have been able to determine, the 4JG2 shares a block with the 4JB1 (which strongly suggests that the transmissions are the same) and achieves the increased displacement through bore and/or stroke changes.

The 4JG2 is supposedly indirect injection, as opposed to the 4JB1 with direct injection, and as a result the heads (and internals) are different. There may also be 4JG2 engines with electronic injection control.

Again, this is all an (educated) guess based on the research I've done.

What Acy76 said sounds right. Some 2.8s didn't have an egr system, but I believe all 3.1s do.

Ok, sounds right to me. So here's a stretch- would it be possible to use the 3.1 pistons and liners in the 2.8 block to get the extra liters? Just wondering.

There's also a 4JH1 engine. My last work had a Rodeo ute with that engine, turbo intercooled, direct injection 3.0 litre. Went okay but was obviously nowhere near it's potential.

It may have an electronicly controlled pump, but a mechanical VE pump should fit.

If the increased displacement is due to bore change alone (and assuming my information is correct) this may be possible. If the extra displacement is due to change in stroke, you'd also likely need the crank and rods. Not much information to go on.
