Well I'm excited about this its my first step to being a professional welder. I passed the AWS 209 Certification test. Its a 6" diameter pipe in the 6G possition (pipe at a 45 degree angle) With a TIG root TIG hot pass and 7018 electrode fill and cover. It certifies me in both stick and tig in all possitions. One more year till I get my BS in Welding and Fab Engineering. Then its time to make some big bucks!!

Congrats!
Is there anything in particular you wanna weld on? Mine equipment, autobody, bridges and structures, etc?
I found myself appreciating the smooth welds on the weight machines and benches at the gym last night. Looked like a buncha nickles staggered on top of each other. What kind is that?

Thanks! Weight machines are either robotic welded or Mig welded. The big money is in the Oil, Gas, Nuclear, and Chemical industry. Basicly code pipe welding. Alaskan pipeline you make about 30 grand for 6-8 weeks of work. 70-85 hours a week tho. But then you have a month off to collect unemployment. Im planning on doing whatever i can make the most money doing with out joining a union if i can. But my idea is ill do alaskan pipeline in the summer and then find a 4x4 FAB shop to work for in the off season.

There are a lot of welders around here because of the oil fields. Welders are the easiest to spot in January; they are the only ones sporting nice sunburns.
Congratulations!

I work with several certified welders in the geotechnical industry, either as inspectors at my company or in the shop/field. Some of those guys are driving a new car every year. Just to let you know there is industry beyond petroleum exploration and transportation.
Congrats!!

You've got to be a union puke to work up here to work the TAPS. IIRC, you've ALSO got to be certified to weld in THIS state.
Don't forget mines and hydroelectric industries, to name a few, like heavy junk repair.

Yeh thats what ppl have been saying about alaska. But the thing is the unions cant keep up with demand for welders so companys do hire outside contracters. Theres also going to be a huge community that retires soon so well see how long that union thing lasts. =P

Don't hold yer breath. Do your homework.
Quite frankly, we need health care professionals far more and way than welders.

if theres no heathcare ppl who are sick die. If there are no welders, worldwide industry shuts down. If you ask me both are important. Welding is more important for day to day life. Heathcare is more important for living.
