It depends how far you wanna go and how much you wanna spend. It's alot easier to paint rims with tyres unmounted.

I bought a cheap sandblaster attachment for my air compressor years ago. You can blast all the old paint/rust/dirt of pretty well. Then just spray your chosen undercoat/base coat/clear coat.

If you want to do it without taking the tyres of the rims you can smear the tyres with old axle grease or oil first. then the overspray just wipes off and you get a tyre shine for free <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

I've done a few sets. Clean well and rough up the existing finish with sandpaper, and sand out any rough areas. Wipe down with a degreaser and hit with paint. I used a polyurethane wheel paint from the auto parts store. It held up pretty well, no flaking or peeling.

Do you sand it down to bare metal or just sand it until primer shows?

As I recall, I sanded to remove any rough spots and then to knock the gloss off the smooth areas. Basically just need to give the new paint something to grab onto.

I painted some chrome steels and all I did was take shine off with steel wool or sand paper and then primered and painted with a metal paint.
