This morning on the way to breakfast with my wife the Sportage stoped running as if I had turned off the inginition and then started running again several times in the 1.5 miles to the restaurant. After we came out from eating the engine would turn over but not fire. I thought the fuel pump had died. I checked the fuse and waited for day-light. I pulled the Fuel-Pump Relay and found a small spot of greed corrision on one of the blades. I switched the two relays in the terminal block and she started right up.

We have had a lot of rain here in central Oklahoma in the last few weeks and it appears that the moisture was enough to cause the failure.

When I got to work I removed both relays from the fuse block under the hood and tightned the terminals on the relays and qalso took the relays apart and inspected them. I foun a little corrision on the inside of the fuel-pump relay.

I cleaned up every thing and re-assembled it and every thing seems fine now.

Been there...twice. Those relays are just your ordinary everyday driving light style relays and not very good quality. My new replacement only lasted 12 months before dying again. Good to hear you knew exactly where to look for the problem, bless this forum.

Actually they are not a standard relay because they have two normaly open contacts insted of one. The relay was not the problem it was a little corrision and loose connections in the relay socket.

Does that mean it uses both contacts in parallel to share the load? maybe that's why I went through a couple of sets already, someone put in a single contact and I've just been replacing like for like rather than what's supposed to be in there.

It is a 5 pin relay. In some versions of the relay it is a SPST or SPDT. The Sportages relay uses both switched contacts connected in parallel to power two different functions.
