Need a Spot
I have a '98 Jeep with a 3" suspension and 1" inch body lift on it. I was looking into getting a bigger lift all together. I was looking at a 8" Skyjacker lift. I was wondering if i would have to alter my drivetrain or make any adjustments to my engine if i lift it this high. Thanks.

Body Damage is Cool
Which model of '98 Jeep do you have, and what size tires are you planning on putting on it?

1977 CJ-7, fiberglass body, AMC 360 w/ headers, DUI ignition, Edelbrock intake and Holley 4150 carb, TF999, Dana 300, 4.56 gears lockers, York air comp, 4" susp lift, 2" body lift, BFG 35" M-T tires, Megashifter, AGR pump & box, REP8000 winch.

If you have a body lift, you must have a TJ. Having said that, if you are going for 8" of lift, This would be my suggestion:
Remove the 1" pucks, and install a 2" or 3" body lift.
Install a good 4" suspension lift.
Add 2" spring spacers on top of that. (the alternative to this setup would be an ultra-pricey long arm 6" system)
You will of course have to add a slip-yoke eliminator to the t-case, as well as a new rear drive shaft. Something will have to be done about the severe angle of the steering components. Maybe a high-steer conversion, along with a dropped pitman arm (which should have come with the 4" kit).
And don't forget regearing axles for the larger tires. The rear Dana 35 will not survive, and will have to swapped out.
As you are probably figuring out, this is a expensive and labor-intensive operation you are looking at. Costs for this type of mod go up exponentially at these lift heights.
Why so high? What size tires are you planning to run?
Your finished product is going to be a fairly unfriendly beast to drive on the street, as you probably know.
Not trying to discourage you, just being honest.

I would get rid of the body lift all together and get an 8 inch long arm kit. Fabtech and SkyJacker both have 8 inch kits. SkyJacker even has a 10 inch kit.

I am also curious about what size tires you will be running, and what type of wheeling you will be doing.

I'd go with 8 or 10 inch long arm kit too, plus the drive train mods. I would never do a 3" body lift again...too many issues appear later even when shifters etc. have been re-set up well.

I would just like to say, that if given a choice, I'd never do a body lift, but this guy wants 8" of lift, and I was trying to give him an idea of how to do it halfway affordably. Has anyone here priced an 8" longarm kit? Holy schnikees, they're pricey. That's all I'm sayin'...
