I have a 1985 truck and the knucle is leaking fluid. What type of lube do I need to use and how easy/hard is it to replace the seal on the back side of this knuckle. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thanks for any help you can give me. It is not the seal on the back of the knuckle that is leaking. It is the axle seal behind the Birfield that is leaking. It is leaking gear oil from the third member washing the grease out of the birfield draining out the felt seal in the back of the knuckle.Prepare yourself for a very, very messy job. Lots of rags and brake clean.

Yes you generally have to: - http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/AxleRebuild.shtmlThere is a shortcut method to getting the whole knuckle off, but if the seal is leaking gear oil into the birf and possibly the hub, you probably want to clean that out and inspect and regrease everything at this time. I had 2 leaking axle seals for about 3-4 months and ended up having to replace 2 of the 4 wheel bearings and 2 of the 4 knuckle bearings as a result. Oil washes the grease out then the bearings don't hold up very long.

Hey 85, Don't feel like you got a lemon. This is a very common maintanence proceedure with these trucks. No it's not like changing sparkplugs, but it's not like working on a transmission either. That one little axle seal that you gotta replace is way in there, so we pretty much clean/inspect everything along the way anyway. You'll know your front end's true condition when finished too. Like stated before, it's not that difficult - just messy. Good luck.

Marlin Crawler just came out with heavy duty inner axle seals. They are supposed to be much better than the crappy factory seal. see here -Scerb

Get your rebuild kit from Marlin, and while you are at it, ask him to throw in a couple of his new design axle seals. They are way more robust that stock, you cannot drive them in too far, and they ride on a slightly different area of the sealing surface of the axle (good for those of us running slightly grooved axles).
Next rebuild they go in mine. [edit] Scerb beat me to it! I have seen them and have a pair, they are much better than stock.
