Need a Spot
Yesterday I moved my Jeep from the front yard to the back & shut it off to load some stuff. About a 1/2 hour later I go to start it again and nothing! The battery is new and I have power until I turn the ignition switch to start & then I have nothing.....engine doesn't turn - radio goes out. I fiddled with it and then it started and ran great.

So this morning I go and try to start it and it is doing the SAME thing & there is no "fiddling" with it this time.

At first thought, it sounds like your ignition switch is going bad.

What type of "fiddling" did you do when you got it to work?

Mostly moving the key. I was thinking the ignition switch also. It isn't though I tested it out with a multimeter and the switch it working correctly. I think I have found it though. The problem is @ the NSS - I moved the wires down at it and the Jeep starts and will continue to start until I put it in drive. Once I move that the Jeep won't start again unless I move those wires. I will take it apart tonight and see if there is a broken wire or something.

I can see where the NSS would prevent you from starting the vehicle. However, a bad NSS should NOT cause the engine to shut down once it's started, necause the NSS is in the "start" circuit", not the "run" circuit. Also, the NSS should NOT stop your radio from working.

It doesn't shut the car down while its running. If I drive it and then shut it down, it will not re-start unless I fiddle with the NSS wires & then I will be able to start it again....the car won't die, I just can't start it again.

But you said the radio goes out. I don't see how the NSS could affect the radio.

My 97 zj was doing the same thing a while back. I found that i just wasnt getting a good ground. It would start sometimes, but some times the lights and radio would come on and evrything would go off once i tried to turn the key over.

You may need to remove the NSS and take it apart and clean the old grease out of it. It gets dirty and the contacts donÆt move freely. There are two small brass contacts and two small springs. Clean it all up and lightly re-grease it and you will be good to go. A new NSS is $200.00 to $300.00

the radio always shuts off when you start a car. if it is hooked up right. i have a 96 grand cherokee and my radio always shuts off when i start the car. thi ignition switch re routs the power from the radio when the key is in the start position and re powers the stereo when in the run position. and my 90 cherokee was dong the same thing and mine was the neutral saftey switch in the tranny i had to slam it in park sometimes so i could start it.

I had my NSS apart about 2 months ago and cleaned it all up. I went to the junk yard yesterday and got another one, cleaned it up & re-greased it and the Jeep is now starting with no problems.
