Hello all, I am new on this forum and am hoping for some help. I have an 85 4Runner that I believe the compressor is out on. The AC light comes on, but the compressor does not kick in. I checked for fuses, but could not find one for the AC. The compressor manually turn if I turn it. It worked last Summer. Any thoughts?
Thanks, JARED

Your fuse is fine; getting power to the AC switch; also check for voltage at the compressor plug. Fuse, if ever needed, is next to the one for the heater, behind the glovebox, right side of console.
x2 on getting it serviced.

I think it sounds like a low charge too,you can jump out the low pres switch and tell for sure, the 134a conversion kit at autozone does pretty good for the money, but you need a vacume pump too do it right

The compressor should be cycled on periodically to keep everything lubricated inside. Leaving it off all winter can lead to seals frying out and leaking. But it could be as simple as the A/C amplifier RPM setting being set too high. If you are trying A/C at idle and it does not come on, but does if you rev the engine, turn the RPM adjustment knob down (behind the glove box).

The AC light comes on, but the compressor does not kick in Do you mean the ac clutch doesn't engage, or that you just don't get cold air? If the clutch engages, the electrical side of things is fine, if not check for voltage at the clutch & work from there. If it does engage then it's time for refrigerant. Dave

Thanks all. I will try the fuse first and go from there.

Update!
Still can't find the %^&$# fuse. I think everyone is right in assuming I need to get it serviced. Thanks, JARED

Okeedokey, for your peace of mind for THAT fuseblock.
Empty junk out of glovebox. Take a small screwdriver and gently pry the closeout curtain off the dash (note the little triangles in the trim). Unscrew the glovebox hinges; remove glovebox. AC, Heater fuses, and heater relay are present, along with the plug for the fan switch.
Service that puppy up and let us know how ya do.

jaredl,
Did you check to see if the compressor clutch is engaging? That is far easier than getting to that fuse....
