what are the signs and symptoms of a rack and pinion steering failing?

Body Damage is Cool
When ours failed it was due to a cracked housing from over extending the tie rod downward-----> = leak.
It was pouring fluid out.

It will usually get hard to steer at about the same time you see fluid leaking out. Shortly afterward the PS pump starts cavatating and making noise. Oddly I can here the sound in my head but can't describe it!

What happens when they get old and wear out? Dunno, never had one get that far I guess they would get loose or something.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I would say, leaking fluids, hard steering, (play on steering assuming tie rod ends, steering u joints, and rack mounting bolts are solid and in good conditions.

Try lifting the front tires of the ground, and with engine off grab tires and steer left and right while listening for any sounds on the rack.

the shop is telling me my stiff steering issue is a killed rack and pinion. could this be so? all i have is strong resistance in left hand turn and mild resistance in right.

took it to the shop today, they wiggled the tires around - front end is tight. so they say "rack and pinion"

the tires were turned from r-l with the front end up and i didn;t hear anything. ther eis no fluid leaking out. everything "looks" normal

thoughts?

well after wheeling this weekend, lisa's is steering fine again, this is leaning more and more to trash in the system
which is causing the pump to bleed off,or just a pump that's failing.

But debri might just be the cause,'cause I can't see a leaking internal problem as "fixing" itself..............
if the r/p is leaking internally it shouldn't be able to fix it's self.

more pondering, but since it's not broke now......

she just keep driving and wheeling.

i just am frustrated as i have searched and searched and have yet to find ONE person who has had to change out their Rack and pinion for anything other than a pulled seal. i have no fluid loss whatsoever.

maybe an aftermarket filter is in order for us?
This might catch the junk before it gets to the pump.

my moms car was haveing similiar problems once, it would be hard to turn one way but the other way was fine. The mechanic that looked at it replaced a tir rod end (or ball joint? ) and that solved the problem.

Jack up the vehicle and check for sloppiness that way. There was no sign of looseness in my moms car until it was off the ground.

Still it could be a rack or pump problem.

well, i am taking it for a "second opinion" this week. sounds like we have the identical problem doug, but mine does not go away. its certainly liveable, albeit annoying...
i hate the mechanic opinion of "change it" then we'll see..
cause if its the pump and i just changed the rack i'll be pissed...
but the way it turns it feels like something is bent, something mechanical- cause there is only one tight spot per side, but turning right is tighter than left.

what could potentially happen internally to the rack unit?

and it seems the front end is tight
