Getting the Wheeling Fever
Last night I picked up a pretty nice 88 4runner and want to run LT255/85R16 Maxxis Bighorns on it. These are fairly tall (33.3) but narrow (10.3). What do I need to modify to prevent rubbing? I won't do a body or suspension lift.

I know this type of question is asked a lot. I searched the archives but couldn't find a real specific answer and was hoping for someone that's already "been there, done that" to pipe up.

Thanks folks.

Joa

Hammer/trim back the rear of the front wheel well where they rub and/or crank up the torsion bars:

Thanks for the reply. Looks like a little trimming should do it.

Another add-on question... this truck is an automatic. I have 5.29s front and rear for my other 87 4Runner 5-speed and was planning on putting these in the 88 for now while I finish my long travel suspension for the 87. Are the 5.29 gears going to screw with the auto transmission (shift points, etc) even with the larger tires?

Do the gears... It will be much better than leaving the 4.30's in there.

Look into an idler arm upgrade as well... Your idler arm will die in less than 3 months on 33's (I have gone through at least 2 dozen).

Sounds like a good tip. Where exactly does it break?

Thanks.

Either the plastic bushings inside will break, the main shaft will bend, or the ball joint on the end will wear out.

The shift points will be fine.
However keep in mind that the effective ratio of the auto tranny is different from the 5 spd, so you'll still find it more doggy than the other was at the same axle gearing... hence Toyota using 4.10 for one and 4.30s for the other. However at 5.29 and 33s it should work out fine. Even 4.88s are OK, but not ideal by any means.

Body Damage is Cool
Back when mine was auto, I was running 5.29's with 32's. Speedo was a bit off, it read high, but the throttle responce and the ability to keep up with traffic with the oversize tires was good.
Definatly go the gears. You'll thank yourself for it!
