Looking to replace the bulbs that light up the gauges and the idiot lights in my dash...motivated b/c the "4WD" indicator bulb is burned out...4 wheel drive works, but the indicator doesn't light up.

figure that as long as i am in there, might as well replace all them bulbs b/c i hear its a PITA and don't wannna have to re-do it.

so i spent an hour searching and found this thread:
Gauge Lights that talks about using LEDs instead of incandescent.
me likey. very much.

Anyone care to share some guidance on a few things:
(1) How do I get to my old bulbs to pull em?
(2) What type/size of LED replacements do I order?

For (1) I expect the FSM will help, so I downloaded all the pdf files for the 1993 FSM, but can't tell which part shows how to get at the bulbs?!?!

For (2) I believe I want the LEDs that replace a "194" type bulb but wouldn't mind some confirmation.

Also, anything I am missing or any "lessons learned" from anyone who has done the switchover to LEDs would be appreciated.

thanks! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
and <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> to "Nathan Buchanan" for hosting the 93 FSM!!

Don't know much about the LED themselves.....but oddly enough, I have a gauges cluster for a '93 (similar to a '92) apart in my garage right now.

The cluster lights use the push in style bulbs. there are actually 2 different sizes and 2 seperate colors (green and white). The bulbs push into these little round plastic sockets and, the sockets screw into the cluster housing. Given that type of setup, I'd think it would be pretty easy to change to LED's.....I've seen larger LED's that would push right into the bigger bulb sockets.....and I'm sure you could find LED's for the smaller bulbs. Not a bad idea, as long s the LED's are bright enough.....LED's last forever and use little power.

....I'm making a custom gauge cluster with after-market oil pressure, temp and battery gauges that actually give measured readings...and I'm swithing the gauge face colors to white (factory gauge faces are black). Should be done in a week or so.

thanks CORunner for the heads up that there are 2 different sizes/types of bulbs in the cluster. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

am thinking that the bigger, "green" ones are for the guages [speedo/odo, tach, water temp, oil pressure, battery, and fuel] b/c they are all green.
the smaller "white" ones are for the indicator/idiot lights [rear antilock, seatbelt, parking brake, 4WD, check engine, etc.] b/c they each have their own color from the panel.

did find the right section in the FSM for getting at the bulbs.
it is in the body mechanical, at B0-32 thru BO-38.
i was looking in body electrical <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

but i am still wondering what type of bulbs?
all i can find is a reference to "194" in the LED post
also wondering how many of each bulb?

thanks!

There are actually 4 types of bulbs.....small white and small green, and large white and large green.

You are correct, the green lights (small & large) all go to light the dash. And, the white lights go to the warning (idiot) lights and the turn signals.

The lights themselves are very easy to replace: (1)Remove the lower pannel on the dash (3 screws and 1 10-mm bolt...I think)(and the gas door and hood releases). (2) remove the upper dash panel (the black one - 1 screw under the AC face plate. That just pulls off). (3) Remove the 4 screws holding in the gauge cluster and unplug the 4 wire plugs in the back....and it's out. The light sockets just unscrew from the back and the bulbs pull out of the sockets...

I can do the whoel operation and re-install everything in about 1/2 an hour.

CORunner, you rock!!
thanks again for the solid info.

i plan to pull it apart this weekend to get a look at the bulbs, and then order the LEDs based on what i see.
if anyone has part numbers for the bulbs, that would be helpful for comparison and confirmation of what i see this weekend?

might even switch from green to red for the dash...
