I have been researching what options I have when it comes to swapping a 3.1TD into a 2nd Gen Rodeo and have been working on different tranny/t-case combos. Today I stumbled across a post from Jerry that I found quite interesting.

I JUST TOOK A LOOK AT THE PIX ON EBAY OF THE TWO ENGINES THAT YOU AND ADRIAN WERE TALKING ABOUT AND THE ONE WITH THE MANUAL TRANS LOOKS TO BE FROM A CAB OVER BODY, ,TRYING TO GET THAT THING S LINKAGE SETUP IN A TROOPER OR A PICKUP WILL BE A NITE MARE WITHOUT THE SHIFTER AND CABLES , THE ONE WITH THE AUTOMATIC ,YOU WOULD NOT BE WORRIED ABOUT THAT IS NOT THE 4L30 TRANS , IT IS A VERSION OF THE ASIAN WARNER AW3080LE TRANS AND IS ABOUT AS BULLET PROOF A TRANS AS YOU CAN FIND , THE TRANSFERCASE IS DEFINATELY FROM THE BACK END OF AN MUA TRANS ADAPTED TO THE A/W ,VERY SIMILIAR TO THE WAY IT IS ON THE BACK OF THE 4L30, THE TRANS IS COMPLETELY ELECTRONIC CONTROLLED ,AND IT IS SAME TRANS AS THE 2004 RODEO CAME WITH , TOYOTA ,AND LEXUS AND A LOT OF OTHER VEHICLES HAVE USED THIS TRANS ..JERRY

So if I am lucky, and not entirely crazy, the transmission bolt pattern to the bellhousing is the same for all of the Asian Warner trannies. If that is true then I should be able to take the A340F out of a Toyota and stick it on the back of the 3.1TD and then I can do virtually any t-case combo with the Toyota stuff.

Does anyone have any pictures or experience with both of the trannies that could help verify my thinking?

Thanks

I think the piece you're missing is that the automatic Jerry is identifying is a *version* of the AW3080LE.

While the transmissions can be the same, the bellhousings can still be different. It is very likely true that this transmission is used in many Isuzu vehicles (as well as other makes) - with different bellhousings for each engine application.

As an example, the transmission attached to my diesel is the same as the one attached to the 88-91 4-cylinder gas engines - except for the front half of the case. Internally it is the same (to be fair, gear ratios may differ, but it is the same model).

A more extreme example is the Mercedes-Benz automatic used in many of the gas and diesel cars from the 70s to (likely) the early 90s. It is the basically same unit (internally) that Porsche uses as a rear-mounted transaxle in the 928. Definitely would not be able to swap it between the two, though.

I still haven't found out for sure, but I'm hoping that the bolt pattern from the transmission to the bellhousing is the same. So it would work like houlster's setup where he used the Isuzu bellhousing to mate up the the Jeep AW4, but with the same bellhousing could have mated up the Toyota A340F.
So I'm still looking into it and keeping my fingers crossed until something verifies that it won't work like that.

Ah, I see. I was thinking you were intending to try and mate the Toyota gearbox to the Isuzu diesel.

If you had the appropriate diesel bellhousing, you may be able to make this work. I think there was a thread somewhere in the tech section a while ago regarding using a Toyota transmission - may be worth a search.

Ok, I found a picture of the bolt pattern for the bellhousing to the tranny for the Toyota A340F but still can't find a similar picture of the Isuzu tranny. Any one have a picture like this one for the Isuzu setup?

Body Damage is Cool
I CAN GET YOU ONE FOR THE ISUZU 4 CYL TRANS , BUT I DONT HAVE THE V6 BELLHOUSING ANY LONGER, BUT THE BELLHOUSING THAT THE V6 , ISUZU USES TO BOLT TO THE TRANS APPEARS FROM THE PIX TO BE IDENTICAL TO THE ASIAN AW30 80 L E TRANS MISSION, THIS IS THE DESIGINATION THAT ISUZU USES IT IS A DIFF , DESIG, THAN WHAT TOYOTA USES BUT IS THE SAME BASIC TRANS THAT IS USED BY JEEP AND THE ISUZU DAN HOLTEN IS USING THAT BELLHOUSING THAT IS FROM A 2004 RODEO V6 ON A JEEP AW30 .. AND I KNOW FOR A FACT IT WILL FIT THE OLDER AW30 TRANNYS FROM THE 4CYL ISUZU ENGS, JERRY

So it sounds like this should be doable then? It should work like this.

Isuzu 4JG2 -> Isuzu 4JG2 Bellhousing -> Toyota A340F Transmission -> Toyota T-cases.

Obviously there will probably some issues with the TC spacing and such but they should atleast bolt together. Cool, I'll see if I can get some of the guys that actually have these motors to get some pictures for me to see if I can verify.

I think the hardest part would be finding the diesel-specific information, as I've not heard of anyone bringing a 3.1 into the country, automatic or manual.

You might want to check on some forums in Australia or New Zealand (I recommend Club Isuzu in NZ; Outer Limits is another good one) to see if anyone can get you this information, as they have these engines available to them locally.

Judging from what I've seen with regard to Isuzu parts interchangeability, if you can get the Toyota box to bolt to the Isuzu gas bellhousing that's probably proof enough that it would work with the diesel, too.

As an aside, I just noticed a complete 3.0 diesel with automatic on eBay (item 300114703518). It's from a private seller who seems to know something about the automatic transmissions. Might be worth contacting him?

Note that this is the 3.0 common-rail DOHC diesel, not the 3.1 you've been discussing, but the transmission information may be applicable.

Thanks, I have posted on the Club Isuzu one and it doesn't seem to be very active. I will try the Outer Limits board and see if I have more luck.
