thanks again for the input. i couldn't believe what i found when i disassembled everything. the front hub oil seal/bearing seal was the culprit. the metal spring used to help seal somehow came out during install and was grinding between the spindle and wheel bearing. what a trip. so, redid everything and seems okay now.
