That was my original plan but I spun a rod bearing right before moving cross-country and needed something immediately that I could install in a weekend. Buddy's shop was able to get the motor from Jasper in a couple days at cost so I went for it.
Hopefully the bottom end looks ok, I decided to just throw some EB goodies at it for now since I'm short on time. I'll give it a good lookover and check the cyl walls etc. from the top at the very least...

wow ,,,all this is busting my bubble. i grew up in jasper country,,,,talking 35 years ago,,,and things can change. They had a real good local reputation then. I bought a 3.0 from them in 98 and had them ship it a extra expence to me in CA. They didn't deal west of the Rockies in 98. Well I lost the engine to water hose breakage and AAA never showing up after 3 trooper calls in over a 5 hour period. It was 105o and it became a life saving action that cost me the engine, running it without water. It had about 25k on it. My problem was AAA. But things can change: Jasper ,I fear, has become like all these giant mega corporation that skate consumer laws -or laws we used to have. Jasper has distribution from the Seattle area now,,,,I see Jasper signs in half the shops in this county,,,they now sell extended warrenteeees and labor coverage insurances. Mega marketing. When I read the paphlets a year or two ago and saw This kinda *@%* and figured they sold out thier integraty. They make more money from insurance than the engines. Kinda like the AIG stuff. My next engine , which I really need right now,,,,will come from a lower milage wreck...

Caught the last one dying just a week before the warranty went out. They also claimed the first one went to "detonation". 2nd engine the "preferred installer" forgot to bolt the engine to the mounting blocks and put the keeper on the sprocket for the timing belt. Imagine my surprise when the engine jumped when gassing it... then later the timing belt ate through the cover and nearly wandered off the engine. My rebuild of their rebuild is still pushin' along just fine after 6yrs. Just need to go through their work and make sure everything is matched and tight. One thing's certain - owning a Jasper reman made a mechanic out of me! ... but I still wouldn't piss on a Jasper rep if he was on fire.

Where were all you guys when everyone was telling me Jasper was so great a few years ago?? JK Decided just to fix the HG and Tchain for now in hopes to sell this turd motor and swap in a Chevy 4.3 after boating season since the 5.3 isn't going to fit well and is guaranteed to have cooling issues from what I've read. 4.3s are cheap (regularly see 'em for $500 with all accessories and harness/ecu) and I'm working on procuring a 700r4 that already has a Yota tcase adapter installed for pretty cheap so I should be all set. Depending on how much I get for my 22re/W56 out of pocket shouldn't be too much more than an EB head, cam etc. and I'll have 2x hp and tq

A cure has been found for my Jasperitis! Picked up a 4.3 out of a '97 Astro van last night with 70k on it including all accessories, harness, ECU, S10 airbox, and exhaust. Will be starting the swap in the November/December timeframe and hope to be done by spring! I'll get a build thread going in the Toyota section here in a bit...

Hello Dok. Just joined. I just purchased a 1996 Montero SR and it has a Jasper motor, of course the DOHC 3.5. I called Jasper and they sold the motor in 2010 to the previous owner. That person had the car since new. Currently 244,000 on odo, so roughly 14k miles per year.
Do you think or does someone know if Jasper would put the newer updated lower plenum on during the remanufacturing process? I asked them but they didn't know. Thank you, Brian
