Well, Im not dishin out 200+ dollars for a K&N FIPK or any others. SO, I had the thought about just buying a K&N cone intake filter and fabricating a bar to holst it up and put the little filter on the block or whatever it is. But what I need is... is if anyone knows an exact size that fits up to the stock tubing where it comes off the filter box or am I just gonna have to do some measurements and search some local parts stores? As well as if anyone knows any other tricks. I have seen this done before just curious to if anyone knew the size for the filter. Thanks

The best wa to save money is avoid k&n filters all together. as long as you've been here you should know they do no good and actually cause more trouble than help. the intake WILL suck in the oil from the filter and the iac WILL get gummed up so you will idle over 1000 rpms. so you will spend more time cleaning it than it is worth. after cleaning my TB, IAC, and intake 2 times i had enough and threw it away and bought a regular paper filter. I dont know why you would want that in your engine compartment. it will suck in warmer air. i thought the thing to have is cold air induction. which is what the stock system is.I will be totally honest with you. I noticed absoluly no change in performance when i changed back to the paper filter. the only thing i did notice is i havent had to take my IAC and TB off to clean them since i ditched it.

but if you are dead set on the k&n filter they do make a filter that fits in the box that is identical in size as the factory paper one.

Howdy Rebel don't get caught up in the advertising lies! Every advantage the hiflow filters have is BEYOND THE RED LINE of your engine! Every disadvantage is in normal JEEP driving. The very best intake setup for a Jeep is from the factory. Yes if you build your engine up to run 7500 rpm and you intend to use it up there...go ahead and install a hiflow filter. But for anything that engine will do the factory filter setup is NOT RESTRICTIVE..

Mondays objective is to make my own setup to eliminate the factory airbox. I want that space to put a second battery and I think it should be simple to build. I am going to put the air intake on the passenger side by crossing over the valve cover and putting a cone filter on the end of a piece of pipe. There are two 1/2" pipes to weld into the main pipe and the rest of those little lines are not needed if you plug them so there is no vacuum leak. If the pipe is too tall where it crosses the valve cover I will just flatten the bottom of it. The support can be bolted to a couple of places on the valve cover. Only real problem will be finding the correct cone filter to fit the pipe.
As stated above K&N is over-rated IMHO. Paper element with a foam covering is the most I think I'll need unless I am going into a very dusty enviroment.
Well we will see what Monday brings. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I'd rather figure out WHY I needed another battery and work out the battery needs before jury rigging my ride with a rude home made intake!

I think what most of us forget these days is this. The engineers are doing a great job of designing most systems and they are balanced to work with the computer system on board. Mods that affect air flow , cooling, and other things such as that will generally cause more harm than good. Yea back in the day when the engine was not managed with a computer we could do lots of things and found reasons in our minds that it was better. I just don't think we can make there mods now without screwing someother things up - just my opinion

If it ain't a Jeep why would you drive it??????

Yea i can definatley go along with that. i know with all my older vehicles i was always adding stuff. but first it was stuff that i knew would give me gains in power and torque. like pistons, heads carbs and so on. then i added exaust for breathing reasons.never did i buy k&n filter. the only reason i had it with the jeep is because i bought it that way. one thing i do know is with the added vacuume and crap i put the 73 chevy 4x4 through im glad i didn't. it would do nothing but suck in crap. as for the monte carlo i couldn't see that tiny bit of performance against the true gains my neighbor, his sons, and i got out of it with what we done.
there are way better mods you can do than a crap sucking airfilter and such. like save your money and have a stroker built, or buy a good 4.2 and build it up and do a 4.0 head conversion. that is if your state allows it as far as emissions. those 2 options will give you true gains.
