Need a Spot
90 4runner 3vze

Last year I swapped motors from a wrecked 1995 4Runner 3vze. The swap included all accessories attached to the motor. Being in a hurry we didnÆt hook up the A/C as the hoses didnÆt match the pin configuration on the new compressor. As summer approaches IÆm starting to miss the old A/C. The compressor is 134a only the old one was R12. I have several questions and welcome any advice.

1: Can I remove the pins on the compressor so the old hose will fit?
2: Do I need to place or add oil in the compressor? How much? What type?
3: Is it necessary to change the o-rings. What type?
4: Anything else I need to address to get this done?

Thanks All.

Getting the Wheeling Fever

1. It's been a while since I did mine. Not sure what "pins" you are referring to, but I put an AC system from an 88 3vze on my 88 22RE with a compressor from a mid 90's 22re. The connections on the top plate of the compressor were pointing in the wrong directions and the hoses wouldn't reach. I put the top plate of the old compressor onto the new one and everything worked perfectly.

2. Ester oil, not sure how much I used.

3. yup, you need the green HNBR o-rings for 134-A.

4. Always replace the drier when the system has been open. You're also supposed to use a vacuum pump to remove all the air (and moisture) from the system before filling it. I borrowed one from an uncle that does HVAC work. I've heard of people skipping this step, but don't know the consequences.

I'm sure someone who's done this more recently will chime in with more info.

you can check with a parts store like Advance for the quantities of oil and refrigerant. I'm looking into this these days as well, and an '87 22R for example, takes 7.5 oz. of oil, and 27 oz. of R-134 refrigerant.

my question is, how do you know all the oil's out of the compressor? none really "poured" out when I took my system apart for flushing (don't flush your compressor, fyi)

When I took the unit off my 87 parts truck, I got a fair amount out. I plan to "flush" it with some of the new oil a time or two before I install it.
