Here is my latest dilema...

My radiator is leaking. It is a two row core. I figured as long as I was going to replace it, I would go with a 3-row core.

It doesn't fit.

I can either have the radiator installed or I can have the fan installed. I cannot have both. I really did not want to install an electric fan either. My plan is to return the radiator and get a 2-row.

Doing a google search, i appears that people are putting these 3-row radiators in. If so, how?

The Jeep had air at one time and I always thought that I was going to hook it up again. That is the only reason I was looking at the 3-row. Oh...it wasn't much more money either.

Is there a block extension on the fan base? Or does it fit right on the pump without an extension?

I've got a 3-row radiator on my CJ7, with an engine-diven fan (with clutch) on the AMC360 V8 engine that's in it.


If you can't fit a 3-row radiator there, I suspect that it's a matter of the brand being used. Try a different one.

The brand of my radiator is Modine.

The extension is made right onto the fan clutch. From the front of the fan clutch to the back where it bolts onto the engine is 3". I was hoping they made a shorter fan clutch, but no luck on that.

Oh...I should have mentioned, this is a 4.2 6-cyl.

And that makes sense to me now. I did not mention in my original post that I have a 4.2 6-cyl which I think is probably a longer engine. With you having a V8 (and probably shorter), I could see how a 3 row radiator would fit.

Hmmmmm. As of right now, I am sending the 3-row back and getting the 2-row.

I put a V8 in my cj7 and due to the fact that te jeep is pretty much custom modified by myself space is a consideration. Anyway I took my torch and trimmed the top inside of the grill just up to where the mounting bolts for the hood latch are. Plus a corresponding amount at the bottom. This allowed the 3 core rad to be mounted on the outside of the usual mounting spot of the grill.Basically moving the rad a bit forward giving a bit more room for the fan. In my case it still wasnt quite enough so I did also get the twin electric fans.

LOL. I was actually looking at what to cut to make it fit too! I decided against that option though. My Jeep hasn't been all cut up and it is a rust free frame and body. So, I'd like to do this without cutting.

I have an 80 CJ-5 with 258 and 3 row radiator but it does not have a clutch driven fan. It has a 16 inch 7 blade fan with shroud. There is a 1" thick spacer between the fan and water pump. Clearance between the fan and radiator core is about 1 3/4 inches. The fan and shroud is the original factory HD cooling setup. With the 3 row radiator the temperature very seldom goes past half way on the factory temp gage even on a very hot day lugging down in soft beach sand.
