could the possibility of a stretched timing chain cause timing issues along with overheating of the engine? as the oil pump, i believe is tied in with the chain, would that affect oil pressure? What improvements should there be with a new timing chain and oil pump? My 2.6 has about 280,000 on it.

Body Damage is Cool
it will effect the timing and can couse overheating but not the oil pump.there is a seperate chain for the oil pump that runs the b-shafts.if you go deep enough to do the timing chain then you realy should replace the b's chain also,if it snaps than you loss oil presure and by by moter.

Not sure if this is off subject. But please bare with me. I have just rebuilt the top end of my 87 SWB..at 110k it runs great, however the "silent shaft" is not that at all. can anyone tell me a little re: the silent shaft elimination kit. How much, how hard, where to locate such an animal. I really enjoy this rig but I AM AT MY WITS END...Help

I bought my kit from ebay and it wasn't to hard to install. Of coarse I did have the engine out. If you are working on it with the engine still in the vehicle you will need some room to work. You have to remove both shafts and the oil pump which is connected to one of the shafts. Just follow the directions in the kit. Mine vibrates a little more, but it seems to have a little more power, plus I am not worried about those darn things going out. I would replace the oil pump and water pump while your doing it also. You dont want to have to tear back into that stuff after you put it back on.

I wouldn't play around to much with the timing chain issue. I would replace both chains and the guides. I waited to long, and after the chain dug into the guides I ended up having to re-build the engine. If you hear a clanking noise when you first crank it, your to late. I wouldn't say it was an easy job to do, but well worth the $125 for the timing kit and another $25 for the BSE kit. A lot cheaper than the $600+ I spent on a rebuild.

Yeah so I have learned. My computer also decided to take a holiday so I had no way of accessing those of you with the experience and knowledge I so badly needed. I regret to say that I have had this poor old girls topend striped bare. Not once on not even twice. a total of five times now. I started thinking headgasket. then noticed the broken topmost bolt of the chain tensioner. next a rounded sprocket. And then realize that the head was infact cracked.(minor bonus, found a great starion head) finailly decided to replace the oil pump Just cause( water is still good) this final time no dist. adjustment!!!I put it back together.Partially in the dark. And not even two revolutions she fired. smooth as a babys....shut it down for the night. slept well! nest morning fired it up.sMOOOOOTH. warmed and ready I started off around the block. bang bang bang bang. I almost left it.

Thanks for the hope that all is not lost. silent shaft be gone.....wish me luck

right now, after the truck is warmed up and has been running for half an hour or so, i will stop at a store and do some shopping for a half hour. When I come back to the truck and start it up, the oil pressure is zero and the lifters and valves are clicking away. Only after I rev the engine, the oil pump kicks in. You can hear the chain rattling away until the pump kicks in.
The motor is good, but I agree about replacing the timing chain and oil pump all at once
