Hi Guys...This may be an anoying question, and it may have been asked before...but not by me..So..here goes..My 92 with the 3.0l, doesn't seem to be going into overdrive. 3700, at 65mph. I was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem before. I would assume that its an electric overdrive, since theres a button for it. Another thing, maybe its related, maybe its not, but the "D" on the dashboard don't light up. Anyone ever have this problem with theirs? Does anyone know anything about it? Talk to you all soon....thanks...

Never had the problem but can give you places to look from FSM troubleshooting section (D range Test).
Problem: Will not upshift 3-4 speed with throttle valve opening under 85%
:3-4 shift valve malfunction :Governor malfunction :OD OFF switch or OD solenoid malfunction
Does the OD OFF light work? I don't think the "D" light is connected to the problem, may be just bulb. The FSM is not very good at explaining tranmission and location/testing of components. It does not say if OD solenoid is accessable from outside of trans. The OD switch circuit is normally closed so a break in the circuit will prevent going into OD. I would first try to trace OD switch circuit.

Thanks for the input PCC. I do not have an FSM, something I really have to get. Does it say how to check the OD Circuit? I did notice, as I did the headgaskets, that on the passenger side, there is a FEMALE half a plug just hanging there. I'm going to put it up on a lift tomorrow. Even though I don't have the FSM, I do have the Haynes book on it. I'll look through their electrical schematics for the circuit. When I look through their book for tranny problems, it says to bring it to a shop. Figures. But I would be most greatful if someone could tell me what the FSM says about how to test for the problem. If it tells how. Thanks guys... let you all know what happens...

If the '92 transmission is the same as the '89 (and I think it is), the first thing to check is the engine coolant temperature switch at the front of the thermostat water box. It's a 1-wire switch that makes a ground connection for the OD circuit and closes when the coolant temperature gets to ~176*F. Install a jumper from that connection to ground and see if the OD works. If it does, replace the switch.

I will assume that that switch controls ONLY the OD. Correct? If it didn't, I would not have a working temp gauge. Correct? Thanks ...

Correct... the gauge sender is on top of the water box on the driver side IIRC.

This happened to me on my 91 3.0. My mechanic changed out the thermostat and it worked! Turns out the temp switch mentioned above regulates when the transmission will go into overdrive. It won't do it until it has reached a certain operating temp. Hope it is something as simple as that. Good Luck!
