Need a Spot
|
Hi All, I'm new to all this(forums and such), and I've got a pair of '87 Raiders that need HELP! I've searched for two weeks and come up with next to squat for replacement sheet metal. Cab corners to be precise. Suspension parts and/or kits are prety rare too. After seeing some of the welding that some of you do I gotta wonder, why not custom fab your own? I don't mean to overload anyone, but has a spring over conversion been done out back on a Gen I? I figure it should be good for three inches or more, and if your replacing the spring bushings... why not? I'm not quite sure what I've started, but I get the feeling I'm going to be buisy for a long time. More to come, and thanks for the help in advance(and the archive).

Not much for parts in Canada. You may need to contact some of the US suppliers and wreckers. Spokane has some good ones. MS Recycling in Sacramento has Mitsu stuff.
I've done a LOT of welding on my truck, but not for a spring-over. It's a pointless change to make in an IFS rig: How you gonna lift the front that far to level the ride?? The front can be raised by adjusting the base position of the torsion bars (and if you trim down the rubber upper suspension bump stopper), you can gain ~ 2" on the front. Then adding another rear leaf/re-arching/or a combination of the 2 will get you 2" in the rear. All of this will still mostly let you use the stock shock lengths. Spring-over and longer rear shackles will raise the rear, but you will need to get different length shocks.
Not much in aftermarket suspension upgrades as the stock rig is very sturdy and capable as is, and vastly under-appreciated in North America, hence no one wants to make anything for it since no one seriously off-roads them. (tongue firmly in cheek).
These rigs have been SAS'd front and (I'm fairly certain) sprng-overed in the rear. But basically with SAS, if ya gotta ask, ya can't do/afford it.
So, if ya wants it, look to Australia (ARB/EMU), or take up metal fab work.
Body parts: California.
There's a good group of Mitsu's in Calgary and area. Check the deisel board, since some of them used to own what you got.

I believe there was a guy back east that did a spring over in the rear and was very happy with the out come.

Selimyar, a few years back he sold the Raider and got a Rubicon.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

I'm one of those CA guys parting out trucks. I'm going to finish with an 87 Raider here pretty soon, well...anyway, I desire the driveway space back and would like to see as much of the truck used before it gets recycled to China.

My rig had an add-a-leaf and rear spring over (done by Steve's Offroad in Soddy Daisy, TN) and sat pretty level when fully loaded with tools and trail gear/spares. My 33 Swampers rarely rubbed in the rear, but it sat high in the rear when not fully loaded down with trail stuff. I had the torsion bars cranked almost to the max in front. Someone PM'd me and I PM'd back about all this ... hope that helps.
had an '88 Montero, then an '04 Rubicon ... sold 'em tho
