School me on scan tools. I am looking for the best bang for the buck in the 200 dollar or under range. ODB II compatible (no need for ODB I compatibility). I am looking at the Actron Autoscanner Plus CP9180 ($169@sears). Thanks

I'm no pro at this but I'll toss in my 2 cents...

I spent a lot of money on a higher-end one from AutoXRay after I had borrowed one of those from a former co-worker and liked it. It was a lot more expensive than competing brands, but I liked the features it offered.

Then I found out that the expensive one I had bought is basically useless (just gives numeric codes when MIL is on, like any $30 basic scanner) unless you spend another $199.00 on a software upgrade. None of this was mentioned on the outside box.

I'll never buy anything else from AutoXRay. It's bait and switch, it's a poor value, and it pissed me off. That's my own personal experience and opinion on the matter, YMMV.

$99 CAN-OBD2 Innova at Checkers website. I got their local store to match the price without the mail in rebate. Our new-used 2006 Mazda3 is CAN only, so now I have a non-CAN version of the same thing I need to sell.

Another option is a scan gauge ( www.aeroforcetech.com )
You may be able to get a better price from www.tonemonday.com
A little more than your upper budget, but way more useful than a "read only" device. Displays any two available parameters, able to read, store, or clear codes on the fly.
Also available in different color combinations.
And NO, I'm not a salesman, just a satisfied customer.
The only problem I've ever had with mine...the display doesn't come on in below freezing weather.

This is what I got.Actron Pocket Scan

[Linked Image]

Its very generic as far as code descriptions, but it at least gives you discriptions. For $90 not a bad deal, its a good first step. Reader is out of the box ready and just install the software.

Just rent it to friends for $10 and you can make your money back quick

About a year ago I was looking for one of them and decided to go a different route. If you have a laptop of PDA for $200.00 you can get much more in the available software than in may tools.
Here is what I got:
http://www.autoenginuity.com/

you can get them on e-bay for less:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Auto...itemZ300118411553QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

You can read and erase codes in many cars. Also as a standard you can monitor multiple sensors, more than any standard tool will do.
