Hi people. Mitsubishi Montero 2002 90k miles. After last off road my transfer case in not working. Front and rear wheel lights on a dashboard go out and central differential lock light is blinking. The situation. I am tried to switch from 4LLc to 4HLc on neutral position but lights continued blinking I am driven some time keep wheel in straight position push and release accelerator but it doesn't help. I stopped and turn engine off. Few minutes latter a start engine and light showing that transfer case switch to 4HLc position but when I tried to switch to 4H central differential start blinking and after some time front and rear wheel lights go out. Is any body know what possible problem could be? My expectation that safety system device is activated but I have no idea what it does means. Any guess really appreciate. Thank you.

There are several sensors located on t-case which monitor current state total of five if I'm not mistaken: is 2WD engaged, is 4WD engaged, is 4LLc engaged, is center diff locked, is 4H engaged. Most likely one of those gone bad. Prob one responsible for 4LLc but can't be sure. So ECU just leaves it in one position. I've heard of those sensors suffering from corrosion in heavily salted roads environment, in Russia for example. Of course it could be faulty actuator but sensor is more likely. Blinking center diff light is equivalent of check engine like but for t-case. You can read fault codes using MTU scanner used for other engine/transmission codes.
Where are you located?

Hi Alex, Thanks for your answer. I am locating in northern California. In my understanding Mitsubishi Montero Limited have some difference with Montero XLS. The difference is Active safety device which is located before t-case to prevent t-case damage. I read a doc, when central differential lock is flashing that means safety device is activated. I am tring to understand how it is could be fix. Please advise. Thanks.

More than likely I am gonna say that its one of the 5 switches on the top of the transfer case that has gone bad, or the transfer case actuator itself. There is a little black case a little bit bigger than 4"x4" I am guessing. And it moves the shift fork around in the transfer case. I would lay underneath and have someone move the 4wd shift lever back and forth through the range to hear if that is moving or not.(Make sure its in park though...lol) And if thats working then my guess is one of the sensors on the top of the transfer case that will need to be replaced.

It won't move since ECU might be detecting one of the sensors is band and won't engage actuator.
ABTO, 2002 Ltd is very different from XLS. Ltd uses electronically shifted t-case while XLS uses plain mechanical lever to shift t-case modes. You've got lever too but it only sends signals to ECU. Flashing CD lock lamp means there is something wrong. You need to read error codes and see what is it. Take it to dealer or you if you technically inclined you can try to do it yourself by reading code off CD lock lamp. Ground #1 terminal off the OBD-II connector, turn ignition on count flashes.

That's your rig. Isn't it? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> PM me if you need some bits of shop manual to diagnose your problem. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Alex,
I took on board diagnostic tool II in AutoZone and check codes. OBD said: "No codes returned". I guess that it is special code just for Mitsubishi. Thank you everybody probably I need to check car in authorized Mitsubishi dealer.
