I'm confuz'd(see), FSM says castor angle is 3 degrees, 30' +_ 45'. What does 30 - 45 mean??? I took my truck to Goodyear for an alignment. My castor specs came back as lt frt: 4.94 degrees and rt frt: 5.25. Goodyear says, "specified range" for my truck is 4.25 - 5.75. So, which one is correct, FSM or Goodyear??? Thanks everyone!!! Aloha. Have a on me....

My '85 FSM shows 2 +/- 1 degree:
- http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/4R_TechInfo.shtml#Steering

30' and 45' mean 30 and 45 minutes;
- 60 minutes in a degree
- 30' = 0.50 degrees
- 45' = 0.75 degrees

If the truck drive's OK, the caster is fine, I think folks run up to 6 degrees with taller tires. Generally you want the caster angle more for taller tires for a little better stability. Too little and you can get death wobble, too much and other things can happen.

thanks, steering is a little heavy while turning and it does not return to straight on its own. An article I read said the cause is too much castor. Thanks again.

" 3 degrees, 30' +/- 45' " mean 3 degree, 30 minutes plus or minus 45 minutes.

The ' (one tick) stands for minutes and " (2 ticks) stands for seconds.

fractions or decimals of a Degree can also be shown as minutes and seconds.....or can be shown as a straight decimal. When the decimal is shown as minutes and seconds, the base 60 minute, 60 second convention is used (60 seconds = 1.00 minutes; 60 minutes = 1.00 degree).

For example:

3 degree, 30 minutes = 3.5 degrees

2 degrees, 45 minutes = 2.75 degrees

4 degrees, 15 minutes = 4.25 degrees

Thanks for clarifying that. I always wondered what the heck that meant.
