In prep for this summer's Carnage Run on 8/17-8/25 (link) I've been researching spare parts for my 4Runner.

I came across the following list from www.rubicon-trail.com but it doesn't specifically include my vehicle.

--------------------

What parts will likely break?
Pretty much every time I am out on the Rubicon I come across a broken down vehicle - at least one !
Could not help but notice that there are some common weak spots on each vehicle. To make sure my observations were accurate I checked with repair shops around the trail and they supported my notes. So, here is what is most likely to break on your vehicle when you do the Rubicon Trail - and probably on any other rough trail:

CJ, YJ
"the only thing that does not break is the radiator cap"
-- drive line U-joints
-- front axle U-joints
-- locking hubs
-- rear axle shafts (especially with LockRight)
-- steering box
-- steering linkage
-- spring hanger
-- frame cracks
-- motor mounts

Bronco
-- front axle U-joints
-- rear axle shafts

FJ40
-- front axle Birfield joints
-- spindle/drum (pre 1975)
-- rear pinion

TJ
-- rear axle shafts (35C)
-- control arm brackets front

--------------------

[color:"blue"]So what are your suggestions for this vehicle?[/color]

4Runner
-- full size spare(s)
-- front axle shafts
-- tie rods
-- ???

Thanks for your input...

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'd post this over on pirate in the trail section, you'll probably get a ton of responses. If you don't do a search first, just don't be surprised if you get flamed, they tend to be a crusty bunch.

Well I printed lists from multiple sites and books and ended up bringing several extra parts to the Rubicon with me. All turned out well as none of the parts were needed, but at least I was prepared. Although, a Toy owner from another group needed a part that I didn't have -- said he had a pin hole leak in his high pressure hose. Will consider that one for next time.

Still signed up for the August run, but ended up also attending the "pre-run" in the trailrides section. Couldn't say no and glad I didn't.

Looks like there will also be a Rubicon run in September hosted by Marlin Crawler (9/14-9/16) so keep a look out.

Roll Me Over
rule #1: whatever you have broken in the past, will break in the future.

corollary to rule #1: if you have beefed up that part that broke, something else in that link will break...

for example, you broke birfields. so you get longfields. something else will now break, like ring and pinion next.
