Need a Spot
I have a 97 SR5 4x4 that currently has some near bald Toyo Open Country 265/70R16s. I did some pricing and no way can afford new Toyo's. I looked at getting a skinnier or taller tire to save a little on cost but dang they are still around $600-$700 a set. Neighbor has some Liberator tires he got at wal-mart that are like new but im not sure about Wal-Mart tires. Anyone have any suggestions for a good, brand name tire at lower cost?

BTW I run almost all highway with no loads, and some sand driving also. It does rain a lot where I live though (Oregon Coast).
thanks!

I scored BFG all terrains at costco for about 110 each, they are mounted, balanced and filled with nitrogen... oooh ahhh... they had a 60$ instant rebate at the time too.... I love them, wearing well, (barely in 15K miles) grippy and not too loud on the highway... the lugs are spaced wide enough that certain gravel gets caught and shoots out at around 70mph... sounds like a sniper...

good times..

I love the Bridgestone Dueler AT Revos on my 1998 T100. Excellent wet and dry traction, good in the snow, and a quiet tread. A set of 4 plus mount/balance/road hazard cost about $600 for the 265/70-16. Much better than Michelins and Dunlops I've had in the past.

You might save money shopping at tirerack.com. And you can see user surveys regarding satisfaction.

Then again if your doing all road driving really, you can buy michelin LTX's. Excellent tires and they last and last and last.

I ran some Walmart's on my 94 Toyota PU with no probs other than they cross threaded a lug nut during a rotation. You might check your local dealership and see if they have any take-offs from a Tacoma they would sell you cheap. I went with the Open Country ATs this time from Schwab during one of their sales for $139 ea for 26575R16 range C. $615 out the door last April.

255/85/16s will be 32.7" to 33.3" in diameter. 265/70-16s are only 30.6" in diameter. The differnce in gearing with 33s is fairly significant. I can still tell a difference with my upgraded 4.56 R&P versus the factory 4.30 R&P and 31s. 265/75-16s are closer at 31.8" and can be had from almost every manufacturer. 255/85-16s are an uncommon size due to their skinny width. Yeah, I meant to change that line "about the same as" after I ran the numbers but forgot. Probably might not fit as I hear that the 285/70-16 tires rub in sharp turns and they are not near as tall. I didn't even notice there were only 2 tires. My goof.
