Hi James, welcome to the board!

This will NOT be a drop-in; this is a PROJECT. Check this gent's 7MG swap:

Ricks Runner Swap

On the last page Rick gave me a couple of links to add as part of his documentation. Do your homework first, and see if you're up to this.

GOOD LUCK! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Andy Zook's swap on 4x4Wire is also full of useful information.

I did this swap over 12 years ago. My truck and info is on Andy Zook's write up. As far as swaps go I think it is easier than most, no adapters needed and 5MGE's are cheap and last forever. The biggest issue I had was wiring but now there are web sites that detail what to do. I used an external VW fuel pump but a EFI tank from a EFI Toyota truck should work. I used a V-6 4Runner radiator (direct bolt in) and electric fans with no issues. Get the 5 spd bell housing from the Supra and any W series truck trans bolts write up with no driveline mods. I ran the 5MGE in my 84 Extra Cab for over 8 years and when I sold it it was still running great. I have a friend who still has a 5MGE in his 85 PU and it runs great. The 7M will have a small power gain but I think the 5MGE is more reliable.

85 4Runner, R151F, Marlins dual case, high steer, and frnt springs. Chevy rears, TJM bumper w/Ramsey winch, custom rear w/swing out tire carrier and rock rails. BudBuilt cross member w/ 2" drivetrain lift, 33" Boggers. 5:71 gears & F&R spool.
