My oil pan drain plug is stripped and leaking. What are my choices for this repair?

did you strip the threads or the plug head?

I've seen self tapping repair kits at a couple of parts shops.

I think just the plug, but I won't know until I take it back out. I guess all the self tapping plugs are the same except maybe the size?

I'm still unclear -- the threads or the plug head?

the self tapping plugs I've seen are like a two part deal. coarse threads with another plug insert.

I'd say go buy one, then pull yours and have the replacement ready.

The threads on the plug, not the head of the plug.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
If its the plug threads that are stripped then just get a new plug. If the threads inside the pan are stripped, get the correct tap and put a wad of vaseline on it before you try to chase the threads (the vaseline will accumulate the metal shavings). If that doesnt work well you might just have to get another oil pan <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

Usually if the plug is stripped, the pan is stripped too.

The right way to do it is to get a new pan. Try chasing the threads first though. A quick fix is a "butterfly" looking universal drain plug from dorman. Its a big rubber plug that has a butterfly style screw like a drywall anchor that goes inside your oil pan. Used to use them on Ford fleet vans on the job. Some leaked, some didn't.

They make a self-tapping oversized oil drain plug you should be able to get at any autoparts store, made just for this problem.
