Getting the Wheeling Fever
1989 Toyota 4WD pickup 22re 135k
So i removed the belts and pulleys from the front of the engine to try and find the oil leak. I let it sit over night and looking at it this morning it looks like oil is leaking from directly behind the crank pulley, and not the timing chain cover...phew! Oil pan has a very small leak also but its not dripping, so im gonna leave that alone for right now.
Whats the best way to remove the crank pulley bolt, and is this bolt reusable?

Ive heard 2 different things about installing a new oil seal on the crank.
1. That it may be neccessary to install a sleeve on the crank and then install an oil seal.
2. The orignal oil seal number had been upgraded to better oil seal, anyone know this part number?

Which option would be the best for me? Thanks for you help

Come on people...I need to replace the front crank oil seal. I'd really appreciate some help. Ive tried putting a breaker bar on the driver side frame and tried bumping the starter but the bolt wont loosen....a little help please.

i had to use an impact gun,,,the only way you will need a sleeve is if the pulley (balancer) is wore,,,,i used a fel pro seal and have had good luck with it,,,,,yes the bolt is reusable

Before you start smashing around with the pulley. Have you checked the chain cover bolt located behind the pulley that requires thread sealent or it will seriously leak oil.

If you are refering to the bolt directly beneath the timing marks on the oil pump them no it is not leaking, infact none of the bolts are leaking oil on the timing chain cover. Oil is definately coming out behind the crank pulley. I thought the trick with the starter and the breaker bar would take care of it but looks like the starter doesnt have enough torque to break it loose. I was using a 12 point 19mm socket but i noticed the head of the crank bolt was starting to get damaged . So i bought a 6 point 19mm socket that i'll use with the impact wrench tommorow hoping that the head of the crank bolt will atleast hold up till the bolt breaks loose.

Hopefully you'll have room to get your impact gun in there. Shouldn't have a problem as long as your impact gun is not huge. If that does not work you can try heating around the bolt. Good luck!

This is a true event of how I HAD to break the crank bolt loose. A 1/2" breaker bar and a 6ft cheater pipe. Put the truck in 5th gear with a prybar jammed in the u-joint on the rear shaft. The prybar stopped the drive train from turning by hitting the frame rail. Jumped off the front tire with the cheater pipe and if finally broke loose. I thought that I sheared it off when it finally let go. Tried all other mentioned methods for removal. Good luck

Did you try an impact wrench on it too?
And did you reuse your bolt?

I've re-used the same bolt every time I've done this. Never had a problem. Just remember to put some anti-seize on the bolt incase you ever have to get it off again.

i put bolts in the balancer and used a pry bar to hold the balancer against the frame. then i used a 36" breaker bar with the cushions grip. the bolts int the balancer bent but it worked , spray aero kriol if got some on that bolt. don't heat it. replace the bolt if is not strait. last time i pulled mine of it was not strait the bolt was less than 20 bucks dealer item. buy the felpro gasket set with sleeve. if you don't use it now. you'll need it later
