I am currently looking to buy a couple of the Streamlight 3aa Haz-Lo headlamps. Found here: http://streamlight.com/product/product.aspx?pid=126 We are already using a bunch of them in the business I work for, and I am VERY impressed with them. This is the best headlamp that Streamlight makes that meets my specifications, so I am looking for recommendations on different brands, just because I am wondering if there could be a different one that is better. I will be using them for mine/cave exploration.(I know all the dangers, so don't anyone dare counsel me on mines! )

My requirements are this: must be bright and stay bright pretty long.(must stay above 75% of full lumen output for at least 1.5 hours) The Streamlight is 34 lumens, so I need something around that or better. Must use alkaline batteries, not Lithium CR123A's unless you can find me an awesome headlamp that is too good to pass up. And it has to be affordable, I really don't want to spend much more then $50 each. I can get the above one for $40. Durability would be great too. The above one is drop tested from 30 feet.

So if anyone can make any recommendations, please do so. Thanks in advance.

X2 on a Petzl. I have an older one that I have used for backpacking and they are great. The one I have can take a large square duracell alkaline or 4 C batteries. I have posted a link to a pretty good online store. I used to order there often and they usually had pretty competitive prices. Haven't bought anything from them recently.

Well, fire service uses almost exclusively Streamlight and Pelican. I've got a Streamlight on my helmet and a Pelican clip-on on my coat. The removable, rechargable flashlights on the trucks are all Pelican. I've got several Pelican handhelds, and a headlamp for duck hunting and home use and love them all. Just yesterday, my girlfriend's 4 yo kid swiped one of them from me and took it all apart and lost the guts... we'll see if he lives through the week

I bought an inexpensive LED headlamp at Target about 4 years ago. I think i paid $15 for it. Has 2 white LEDs and a red one.

I've used it countless times in the woods hunting, camping, around the house (GREAT for attic work) its been submerged in water, mud, you name it. Lost it for a few months last year...it spent the summer in a hot attic hanging on a truss from when I was putting in a fan bracket.

Its hella bright for what I use it for, and has been used under much more harsh conditions that it was probably designed for, and has been 100% dependable.

Now that you all have posted those Petzl ones...I feel it might be time for an upgrade!

Been happy with my Petzel Duo.
Leds on one side and a focus adjustable halogen on the other.
4 AA lithium batteries will last me several days of caving before they need to be replaced.
Underground you really need a high output light. LED's seems to just get swallowed up in the darkness. Surefire LED's seem to be the only exception I've tried but unfortunatly they haven't come out with a headlamp yet.

Course, you could always go old school:

Seeing further than 3 feet in front of you is SOOOOO overrated anyway.

I will have to look into the Pelican, I didn't realize they made lights. I only knew them for their cases. Thanks to all.
