Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hello, I love the forum here...lots of cool off road info!

I recently went off-road with my 2002 Montero Sport and had a great time using the 4x4 as it is supposed to be (I live in the city and don't get many chances).

I had an odd issue with the dash light flickering after the change to 4-wheel drive had already occured (left it in 4-HI while I was camping). I am not talking the bliking when changing to and from AWD, but the light would flicker at differant speeds while I was driving in 4-HI.

I tried on one occasion to get in 4-LO but the light was not visible at all so I left it in 4-HI and it flickered a while till it finally stayed solid. Could this be that the electrical connecetion is gunked up at the transfer case? The 4x4 system is new to me, where can I get in and clean this out?

Is there another issue that could be causing this? I am still under an aftermarket warrenty and want to take care of this if it's a problem more than that.
Sorry for the long post, thanks in advance!

Body Damage is Cool
You prob didn't use 4Hi or 4Lo much. So just use it more often it will go away most likely.

Yeah, I just got this in January and I try to at least put in in 4-H on occasion to combat the city driving.

It sounds like it isn't a big deal, I guess I need to find some open areas and tear some $*!# up!

Thanks for the response Alex!

Don't put it in 4H for city driving (dry paved roads) 4H on Sport AWD = locked center diffential = part-time = possible damage to t-case.

Oh I wasn't going to be doing that!
But I will be looking for a open area with some dirt/mud and some rocks and give this thing a workout!!

Old thread...the fix to my problem has been identified!

Just last week I had the transmission throw a SES code (P0720 Output speed sensor malfunction IIRC), shift irratically, and the "N" light was flashing on the dash. All this happened and I got home in fail safe (3rd gear). Well it sat for the weekend, and I got it to the dealer dreading what they would tell me...

Well there was a "broken" power wire to the output speed sensor. $300 to get to the wire and solder it. The tranny is fine now, and I decided to throw it in 4-H for shits and giggles and the system worked like it was brand new! The light blinks for two seconds, and stays solid like it is supposed to! WAHOO! No more flickering!

Just thought I would post this up...in case it is helpful to others. The issue I had was NOT a "blinking" 4-H light, but it flickered like it wasn't getting power to stay solid. In the end, I guess it wasn't.
