I haven't had my 00 Tacoma but a few months and I've started noticeing that sometimes it don't want to shift into reverse or first gear without shoving it in. Is this normal for a Tacoma with 114k miles on it?

Somewhat normal. Tacoma manual transmissions are great but they can be a little notchy. Do you know if the gear oil in the transmission has been changed before? Most 5spd owners don't think to check/change the trans oil when they are supposed to. I would suggest checking the oil to see if it is dirty and if so, drain and refill with new. Most people use just standard gear oil(80w-90w). A good many have reported that they get better shifting using Redline MT-90. It is a synthetic gear oil that is not "too slick" for the syncros in the tranny. It however is more expensive than the regular gear oil plus you have to find a place that carries it like a speed shop.

Thanks man that makes me feel better about it. I'll try changing the gear oil in the transmission.

Mine gets hung up once in a while too. I usually just let the clutch out a bit and spin the gears so they line up.

Always get a 'new to you' truck on YOUR maintenance schedule, starting with changing all fluids. If you still have problems, the shifter bushing might be worn; 1-banana job. www.redlineoil.com
