Body Damage is Cool
Bummer. I had so many problems with the driver side cv axle (cheap Autozone replacement breaking twice). The passenger side was my reliable axle. Last night I noticed grease on inner boot of the passenger side cv axle. It has a small rip, but I haven't found the actual rip yet. I caught if very early.

What are my options? Is the passenger side a major PITA to pull like the driver side? What about about split boots? Did a search, but couldn't find what I needed (I mention this for the sake of those who prefer we eliminate the live, interactive community in favor of the non-personal search feature).

Thanks,
Pete

Hey Pete

Both CV axles are the same PITA to remove. If it's just the boots, get a mecatech boot kit from Matt. Comes with installation tools and instructional DVD. I've done one side of boots in about 30 min in the campground before. Before that I tried the split boots from the auto parts store, and they are worthless.

Good luck,
Andre

So, the mecatech boot kit works on the inside boot (diff side)? I've only seen it used to replace an outer boot.

Thanks,
Pete

I think the full kit comes with all 4 boots, but yes, it covers both inners and outers. I didn't use the installation cone that comes with the kit. I just separated the joint at the inner cup, and removed the cage and balls (just one snap ring). That will give you access to both boots. To do it that way, all you need is boots, band clamps, and I highly recomend the band clamp tool.

If you go offroad, I recommend Isuzu salvage CVs over aftermarket. They are much stronger.

Yeah. I finally did that. Picked up an axle for about $65 that looked really great from an '01 Passport. Just wish I learned that earlier.
