Getting the Wheeling Fever
anybody know how many rte trucks were made? im only talking about trucks and not the 4runners. because im still thinking about trying to find somebody that would trade me even for a truck that did not come equipped with a turbo. but if these trucks are that rare, i might just keep it.

Not a lot of them around anymore. You also have trouble finding turbo-specific parts anymore, short of aftermarket.

Body Damage is Cool
I don't know. Rarity is only a good thing if the rare object is desirable, otherwise, rare just means "hard to find parts for."

Turbo trucks that are 20+ years old and in need of a new turbo and/or headgasket aren't very appealing.

Turbo trucks that have benefited from good maintenance and/or replacement parts (not talking buildup, just proper maintenance so that everything works right and isn't about to fail) are MUCH harder vehicles to find. These vehicles have value, but unfortunately, I don't think their values holds relative to the true rarity of a clean, well maintained turbo truck. There just aren't a lot of these.

Turbo trucks that have been modified for more power are very much a mixed bag, as it is easy to make additional power in a way that severely stresses the motor, thus shortening its useful life. Needless to say, the turbo trucks are hardly '71 'Cudas or '63 split window Stingray Corvettes, so even a truck like mine, which has a motor that has been very carefully prepped, maintained, and documented, has a very marginal resale value. However, it does have other redeeming qualities

Dunno if any of that helps, but that's how I see things: 22RE trucks are valuable because they are reliable and will go for 250k+ miles on a good rebuild. 22RTE trucks are lucky to go 125k miles on a rebuild, as either the turbo or headgasket will fail before then. But they are fun to drive.

A final thought on numbers: the 22RTE-Trucks group on Yahoo has about 630 members. Relative to the total number of Toyota trucks out there, this is clearly a drop in a big bucket, but it's enough to document that these trucks are still out there and some folks still want to either improve them or maintain them. If you really want to swap yours, you might try posting there and seeing if you can find any takers.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

I'll take the quality in your posts over quantity any day.
