Just went on a trail and my rear axle problem seem to be worse. When I get crossed up so one wheel is loaded and the other has little to no weight it sounds like gears slipping. Its done it since I beat up my diff cover in moab and dumped the fluid twice. It had been getting worse since then though. When I replaced the cover after getting back I didnt see any broken or damaged teeth on any of the gears, or any other damage. No metal flakes or pieces in the oil. Does this sound like a broken LSD? Something else?

I have never heard clutch chatter from an LSD before but cant imagine that horrible noise is it. I have been using royal purple gear oil in it since Moab Zu Zoo. Their site says it has LSD addative in it and no additional addatives are needed.

When not heavily loaded on one wheel all seems normal and I dont hear any odd noises from it.

Are you rubbing on the inner fender/mud flap/ect? There should be no "gear slipping" noises coming from the diff. Even with chipped teeth, there is no way for it to skip gears.

It might need more LSD additive. Some need more, even if the gear oil has it included. Go do some tight turns in a parking lot and listen. It will chatter if there is not enough.

Nope its not rubbing, I'm running 30x9.50 on stock 15x6.5 wheels with a 3" lift so have plenty of clearance. Dont have mud flaps either.

Its only done it since Moab when I lost all the diff fluid twice. I did smack the ring gear with the diff cover on a rock but didnt see any damage to the gears, just the cover. Havent noticed any noise while doing a full lock turn on flat ground. I might pick up a bottle of addative tomorrow and run that in it this week then test it on the local m'cycle hills next weekend to see if it helped any. I noticed it doing it there in a couple spots a couple weeks ago.

Mike was behind me in his rodeo and said it didnt look like the unloaded wheel was doing anything so I'm not sure whats going on. I am having a problem with the e-brake sticking on so that might add to the problem. Will have to find the reason for that as well.

Are you sure that you didn't tweek one of your rear suspension links? If you did, then the axle can shift is a manner that it wasn't designed to do and may in fact be rubbing even though it appears that you have enough clearance.

Spend some quality time lying under the rear end looking for any rubbed or shinny spots, particularly on the fuel tank, etc.

I'll check that tomorrow. I did slightly bend the right lower link during the Moab trip. Been thinking of getting out the port-a-power to see if I can get it straightened out again.

Picked up a tube of LSD addative and put it in today. Only used 1/2 tube for now since the purple stuff is supposed to have some in it. Will test again after running it all week, will put the rest of the tube in if its still doing it. Did some googling and found a few posts on forums about LSD's chattering with royal purple.

Couldnt really see anything as far as rubbing. There is one spot on the passenger fender well that looks like the tire might have hit it but not sure. Will try to get it in full stuff next weekend and look at it.
