Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Good day! I have a 87' pickup, and whenever or at least most of the time, when I shift from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, I hear a clank, or almost a tink noise if that helps. Is this normal? I checked the u-joints and I don't THINK they are worn beyond what is acceptable. From what I know the sound is from undernieth me. Also when going down the freeway, or at higher speeds, when I let off the throttle I feel it clunk, same when I apply throttle. Normal or is something worn out?

The "tink" noise is a u-joint going south. It is a very distinct noise and it is most always a U-joint.

X2. Classic description of a u-joint impending failure. I'd put the truck up on jackstands, neutral, no park brake, and play with the driveshaft(s) until I found the culprit.

Another common area where this sound comes from is the slip joint. It wouldn't hurt to add a little grease and see if the sound goes away.

I had the same clunk noise at light throttle. I replaced the ujoints and that made no difference, i kinda suspected that there was some slack in the rear third member. So a few months ago i swapped my stock 4.10 units for a set of stock 4.88's. Now i have no clunk, only buttery smooth power transfer from the engine to the road..

on my old truck i had the same problem and it drove me nuts! but i found out on mine that it was the slip joint. of course, i found that out after having every clutch part known to man replaced.

I had a similar noise plus a bad pinion seal.when I put the aussie in I tightened up the pinion shaft nut and replaced the rear ujiont for good measure.sounds much better now and not as much vibration.
