Hi, this is my first time here. I have a question I hope someone can help me with. I have a 93 Montero SR,90+k miles, with the electronic controled shocks. I'm replacing them with KYB MonoMax and will disconnect the ecs. How the heck do I remove the top of the shock? I removed the control cap with 2 screws, the next nut I see just flexes the top(when I turn it it just springs back to where it was). Any suggestions on how to remove these? Thanks ,Marc

I did this last year. My truck had rust, I pretty much destroyed the shocks getting them off. There is a metal piece under the nuts that is supposed to stop the shock from turning when you turn the nuts. The piece of metal is very weak and will bend/break, all 4 of mine did. You need something to hold the rod of the shock to stop it from turning. You cant get to the rod without messing up the metal cover attached to the top of the shock. Mine were worn out and I did not care if I messed them up. There might be an easier way, someone else should post up in the next couple of days.
Make sense? If not, ask more questions.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

thanks,I saw 2 pieces of metal sandwiched by a bunch of nuts. the top one has 2 "ears" that hold the ecs module, the next lower piece was wacky shaped. If I break 'em I dont care, as long as they arent needed for the new (non ecs) shocks. If I can fit a hacksaw in there maybe I could cut them out. ? ?

Yeah, that weird metal thing is what I was talking about. Maybe you could find some way to hold it with a vise girps maybe?
You dont need any of the old parts for new shocks.

Thanks for the info. I ordered the shocks online. When they come I'll start taking out the old ones.

If your truck has any rust, have a hacksaw or sazall ready. I had to cut 2 bolts out.
