I just picked up a 1982 Toyota for $450 running. I like the feel of the engine (22R) and tranny(L50) over my 20R/L43 combo. aside from the engine swap..what other stuff do I need to change? The ignition system seems different then my 1980. Not sure if 82 ran a computer...or if that was for EFI only. Tomorrow when I get her home I am going to look over it better. I was press for time but my interest in buying it was really for the tranny and extra t-case. But, now that I had time to think about it. I was thinking of the engine. Only different that I saw was a header and mechanical fuel pump. Is their a block off plate to replace the pump? I plan to use my electrical fuel pump currently on my 1980 yota.
I also bought a Marlin heavy duty clutch and flywheel for my 1980 toyota. It would seem that the clutch and flywheel should work on the 82 tranny. They are new...in fact I am still waiting on the flywheel. Will they work? I can do the labor it is just the prep work that takes so long. I don't want to run into many problems while I have it apart. I would like to know before hand.
That is all for now. Thanks again for your input.
Mike

Ask Marlin about the plate; am thinking it should work.

DO A COMPRESSION TEST and a leakdown on the donor truck so you have a point of reference; if it's running, but the numbers are on their way out, then go ahead and rebuild the darn thing. 142-171 psi, +/- 4%. If numbers adjacent to each other are low, you might be looking at a head gasket.

Also, before pulling the engine, flush it out and put some descaler in there; open up the heater core, and give it all a good flush. No sense in putting it all back together if it's still gunked up in the plumbing; make sense?

You might need to do a little floor pan work to compensate for the shifters (side v. top). Check our Toyota FAQ here above for more specs. '80 I believe was the only year the Yota got that L43, so I think you'll be okay xmember wise, but do the reading. Bellhousing should bolt right up.

That's all off the top of my noggin enyhoo.

I recall the heater not hooked up on the 82. A compression test is a great Idea....no sense in replacing my 20R with a 22R that is dieing....although, it felt stronger....seat of the pants feeling.LOL
I was thinking along the lines of wireing issues. Do I keep my 20R wiring or replace the wiring from the 82...I think I would have to pull all of it out(82)?
I know it's early..or late depending on the time and location of everyone. I still need to go pick her up.
Thanks again,
Mike

Seems to me the ignition stuff will be paramount to keep. I helped drop an 84 cab onto an 82 chassis with a 21R-U sitting in it a few years back. The alternator was a little different in terms of the plug and the bracket for the 'ears' for the bottom bolt.

Compare the ignitor/dist part numbers too, but try to resist brushing the labels off; I smudged mine on my 83.

I've got the vaccum line diagrams if you don't already have Scerb's website bookmarked.

It's a trail rig pretty much now. It has a header on it. I was wondering if I can bypass the mechanical fuel pump and run my electric one. I'm not sure if I would have to remove it and fab up a block off plate or leave it in...or replace it and take out my electric fuel pump. So. I should stay with my original wiring?

On the block, yep, Toyota puts 'em on the 22Rxx head when it's EFI configured. It's the plate and a gasket where the pump's mounted on the head.

I imagine you're fine for the wiring, but def. keep the parts, esp the ignition parts I mentioned, as that stuff is coming harder to come by, and NOT CHEAPLY.

Too bad you're so far away, that bed's probably in better shape than mine.

Their is a lot of stuff I would like to keep. But, after the swap I am giving it to my best friend. The bed has some dents/minor surface rust but way better then mine. The down side is that it is a short bed. If it wasn't rolled I would of kept the bed and cut the back half of the cab and made mine a x-cab. The front axle looks looks good. No leaks like mine.LOL
The front windshield is new. Original bucket(looks like) the dash is way better then mine...I may swap the cover as well. Nice steering wheel. I did notice that the power steering pump is different then mine. I hope it is better, my old one leaks some.
Thanks for your advice. I need to get out their and check things over....get the brakes working and fix the fuel problem and drive it some.

Well fuel pump seems to work. That thing on the carb that gets power(fuel silinoid)...has power. Not talking about the electric choke. I see fuel in the cite glass. But it wont start. I can get it to start with carb starter fluid but once that runs dry it dies. I may have to look in their and see if fuel is squirting in their with the carb.
any other thoughts are suggestions? aside from removing the carb and rebuilding it....well maybe remove it for more cleaning.
