Hi All,

I have an 81 toyota truck with a newly rebuilt carb. For the past few days I've been trying to figure out what is wrong with the choke... Ive checked the resistance on the choke coil , and it is within specs. I hooked up the voltmeter to test for voltage on the power side of the harness, no reading. Shouldn't I be getting 12 volt reading from the power side of the terminal ? I've tested it with the ignition on, and with the engine running. At this point I'm stumped.. Thanks for your help

You really didn't tell us what is happening.
Is the choke failing to close?
Is it failing to open?
What sort of driveability problems are you having?
With enough info we can probably help, but so far we don't even know what the problem is beyond "I hooked up the voltmeter to test for voltage on the power side of the harness, no reading"

Dave

Hey there sorry I wasn't more clear, here's whats happening..

Basically what's goin on is I can't get the choke to fully open , the truck remains high idle when warm, unless i manually click the fast idle cam downward. I've done vacuum tests according to the FSM on the choke opener diaphram , that part works OK as does the choke breaker.

Now the electric choke coil , this is where the voltage tests came in, is not getting heated. I did a resistance check that came out within specs. The choke opener diaphram almost opens the choke fully, is the electric choke coil supposed to fully open the choke from that point ?

Also I'm not sure this has anything to do with it but the fuel level in the sight glass seems a little bit high.

Hope that was a little more clear, Thanks. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

There is one wire going to the coil, and it gets something like 6V with the ignition on (it may be more, or even 14v, I forget....). Make sure it is hot with ign on.

I get zero voltage to the wire.. there is absolutely no power to the choke coil , with the ignition on / or engine running.

Also just noticed A/C does not kick on either, all fuses are good under dash.

Well that is why your choke is not opening. Can either find out why thats happening, or cheat and run your own ign wire to the coil.

not sure how but i'm going to check the choke relay, thats the only thing i think it could be if fuses are all good. Looked through the repair manual can't find anywhere how to diagnose it.

Well, current for the choke heater comes off terminal "L" on the alternator (don't ask me which one that is). I'd check all the wiring and the alternator to make sure everything is snug and clean.

Well if anyone else ever has the problem that I had, ( choke won't open) and sensor light & battery light is on... replace the charge light relay, thats what the problem was for me .. and the part aint cheap either.
