AT Oil Temp, Battery/Charge, and E-Brake Lights All Stay On? #823117 07/04/07 07:43 PM

Getting the Wheeling Fever
All,

I am having a strange problem. When I start my '85 4Runner, automatic, the AT Oil Temp, Battery/Charge, and E-Brake lights all remain on after the buzzer stops and the other lights go out.

The truck runs fine, the oil, brake, and AT fluid levels are fine. There is no way the AT Oil temp could be hot after sitting for 4 days, and I know the battery doesn't need a charge.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this or have any clues on how I can go about diagnosing this? I'm sure it's something electrical but I need somewhere to start.

Justin

When the brake and battery lights come on together its a failing alternator (even if the truck runs and starts, it will soon fail) but I've never heard of the trans temp coming on with it. Wouldn't hurt to check the alternator voltage.

I had the same thing happen several years ago. On your battery positive post are two leads, a thick one and a thinner on that runs to the fuse box just behind the battery (85 22r). In my case that lead had corroded at the battery terminal. A bit of cleaning, re attach, and its been good for years. For your sake I hope that is what it is, cheaper than a new alternator. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

x2 on the above two posts. It could be one or the other. Either the alt is going south or the wire from alt to bat is bad. Alt could still be good but because wire is bad it will turn bat light on along with brake light. Also check alt fuse . Also check alt wire junction box (small flip open housing) in area of ign coil.

All,

Thanks for the tips. I'll check all the connections and everything before I go replacing the alternator. It seems like just when I have enough money saved to start making some upgrades, I have to use that money on maintenance (radiator, alternator, brakes, etc).

Hopefully the AT Oil Light will go out too, that just doesn't make any sense. Is it possibly a warning that a solenoid is bad?

Alternators are simple to rebuild with good junkyard parts. Hope that saves you some coin...

Don't replace the alternator, just replace the brushes

Need a Spot
Man I'm Having the same problem. I have a 82 22r toy. I've replaced the alternator, voltage regulator, cleaned the skinny wire off the positive post. What I havent checked is the "Also check alt fuse . Also check alt wire junction box (small flip open housing) in area of ign coil" Where exactly is the alt fuse and does a 82 have a wire junction box? What else is in the loop that can be causing both brake and battery light to turn on at the same time? Any help would be appreciated

Just had something similar happen to my 85 XtraCab automatic. Drivng down the freeway and when I hit 2000 rpm, the AT Temp, Charge, and Brake lights would begin to glow. Changed the alternator this weekend and all seems to be fixed.
