A little more info on this. It starts at startup when it is really hot outside, when I leave work in the afternoon. It lasts until I put it in first gear and stsrt to drive. The Clutch depressed or not does nothing. Revving it up a tad does nothing. It will not squeal when I crank it in the morning to go to work. The AC on or off has nothing to do with it. Any Ideas, advice??.......Thanks

This sounds different from your thread starter....this sounds like the alt tension pulley bearing. They actually go out quite commonly. Wiggle it and see if it has side/side slop. The bearing is removable.

It is different. It used to only squeal when I was at high RPMs, it now squeals on crankup, and at high RPMs. The length of time it squeals seems to be getting longer as well. I felt all my belts, the alternator belt is significanty more loose than the others. I cant recall ever tightening one on a 22re. Sorry for being a stupy mechanic but does the old broomstick and a long handle socket work or do I have to get into another pully or other stuff. I searched for "replacement/tightening" post threads with no luck, and I guess the FSM assumes full blown mechanics are the only ones reading that, so there was no help there. If anybody has a step by step, I would appreaciate it.

I found that hand pressure was enough to get the belt tight....You will need a 14 and 17mm wrench to loosen up the adjuster pulley. By the way, how did the adjuster pulley bearing feel to you?

To my knowledge, every 22R or 22RE that I have ever seen doesnt have an idler pulley to adjust tension on the alternator. They are only used on the power steering pump.
If the belt feels loose then it is likely causing the problem. When you said you had new belts I assumed that you installed them. If you havent ever tightened a belt then you might want to buy a Haynes (preferably) or Chiltons manual. They cover the basics such as belts and might be a good learning place to start. To adjust the tension on the alternator simply loosen the nut on the alt pivot bolt on the back bottom of the alternator and locking bolt on the bracket on the front of the alternator. Once its loose put a pry bar between the block and alternator and pull down to put pressure on the alt. At the same time tighten the lower nut enough so it wont move back easily. Remove pry bar and put hand pressure on alt and fully tighten the front bolt. Then finish tightening the rear nut. There should be about 1/2" deflection when tou push down the belt between the alt pulley and the fan pulley. This is all spelled out in Haynes or Chiltons. If you still cant do this then I would pay someone to do it. The longer you wait the more glazed your belt will get from slippage.
