Getting the Wheeling Fever
I just thought I'd post this and see if anyone has had a similar problem and might know what this is.

My truck has had this since I got it but it just keeps getting louder. When I drive my truck there is a loud metallic rattle coming from underneath the truck, it starts at about 2,000 rpm then goes away and comes back with higher rpms. It doesn't affect the driveability any it's just really annoying. Anyone else have this problem? Also, some days it doesn't happen at all, really strange...

One thing to try is a rubber mallet to tap on things underneath the truck to see if you can duplicate the noise. Might be something loose in the exhaust, for example.

If you're running the 22RE with power steering I'll be willing to bet it's the idler pulley. The little bastard HOWLED at about that RPM and sounded like a squealing belt, then rattled and got that metallic sound. I at first thought I spun a cam bearing LOL! Pull that guy off and check the bearing for play.

Thanks for the replys everyone! I will check some of that out this weekend. It sounds like it's coming from the transmission area so I will definitely look for that clamp. But alas... today my clutch sprung a leak and it's dripping all over my foot. Goodie smile

Mudrunner
Mine did that, made a heckuva racket.
Turned out to be a bad catalytic converter.
I guess the stuff inside had broken loose and was rattled around by the exhaust gases.

I just had one start on my 87 4Runner this week. It's the exhaust pipe where it enters the muffler. Rust. I've seem the same thing on my wifes 88 Camry...
