About 2 months ago I switched my 91 Mercury Capri engine oil from 10w40 synth to 5w50 synth. and noticed a big improvement at the Capri's 90k. Finance's Rodeo has a nasty ticking sound at cold (common for the Isuzu v6), has a 140k on the odo, so I thought why not try the 5w50? bingo! qieted in right dowm. So a couple of weeks ago the Sporty was due. Put in 5w50 synth and I'm seeing a about 2 needle widths drop in coolant temp. not hearing the valve slap in the morning. got 42k odo. So far I'm liking it. So what's everybody else using? opinions?

5-30 regular until next oil change, then I'll try 5-50 synthetic. Only 30k miles on motor. All synthetic in drive train, but when I go to the LSD's I'll probably go with regular gear oil with LSD additive. How long do you run your synthetic? Since I only drive it about about 7500 a year, should be good for 2 years. Any specific brand? Everet <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

Amsoil is good for 25,000 miles if you use there new style filter. The filter they have is better than Banks Baldwin which used to be the best. I never run mine past one year because of the possible contamination of the oil by moisture and other byproducts of combustion that no filter will remove no matter how good it is. I do use Black Stone Labs to test my drained oil for metal particles IE bearing wear ETC. I treat all my gas powered motors to this same treatment and I have never lost a motor yet to loss of lubricant. I did blow up a few 460 Fords in my jet boat but that is under racing conditions and very high RPM's There is a ton of information on the web about oil and many people have different opinions. I just stick with what works for me. Another product I use is Tuf Oil. This is just not a slick oil like all the rest. You use it every time you change the oil. Back in 1983 the company sent me a sample to try in one of my companys work vans. It had the old style carb motor and after I put it in the RPM's jumped 750 RPM and I had to take a screw driver and turn the idle down.. That just goes to show you how slick it is. It will not cause a fuel injected car to do that because the computer controls the idle. This stuff works and you should see a little better milage to boot. Here is the link for your reading pleasure. http://www.tufoil.com/consumer/home.html

Full synth is good for life if you change the filter on a regular basis along with regular top ups (same brand, same type, don't mix and match)
I've seen underground engines that have run the same synth oil for their life-span, just change the filter every 1000 hours. Just did an overhaul a few months on a old cooper 8 cyl diesel that was built in the 40's and has been running the same synth since it's last overhaul in 94' thats 13 years on the same oil, almost 100,000 hours on the clock!

I used to be quite familar with Amsoil as my step-father was a dealer. Using Castrol ATM I change my engine oil out at every 7500. or every Summer's end. Diff oils at every Winter's end. (really need to do the vent extention mods on diffs) Filter's are OEM
