the 2.8 went out in my 90 trooper and I am having it taken out as I type. I am wanting to do the 3.4 but I dont know alot about the swap and neither does the mechanics that are going to be installing it. There is an english barrier, they are really good mechanics they just dont know alot about these motors. Is there a right up on exactly what all I will need and what issues I am going to run into and what 3.4 from what car or truck. I know a mid 90's camaro but I hear that something needs to be moved to the other side of the block and holes need to be taped and was wondering what it is and why it needs to be moved so I can tell the mechanis what to do. I dont have all the tools and know how to do it but my buddy has a repair shop with lifts and engine hoists and everything I need.
I would appreciate if someone could inform me on what all it is going to take and what needs to be done and what needs to be changed.

1st off, contact EdMc on here. He'll send ya a lot of documentation on it.
2nd, you're looking for the 3.4 out a 93-95 camaro or firebird with the vin code of 'S'.
3rd, all of your external engine stuff bolts onto the donor 3.4. So, when you get the 3.4, strip it of everything. All accessories, intake and exhaust. You want just the block with the heads still on it. You'll use all the accessories and intake and exhaust manifold from the 2.8.
4th, the starter is what needs to be modified. On the 3.4 block, it's mounted on the passenger side, but for our application, it needs to be mounted on the driver side. Just take measurements off the 2.8 block and transfer them over to the 3.4 block in the correct spot. Drill and tap the holes. Not that hard, but measure twice, drill once. Otherwise you'll have a fun time trying to patch it up.
5th, either get a TBI unit off of a 4.3 (search on here for which ones work exactly) and use it or you at the minimum need the 4.3 injectors placed into your 2.8 TBI. Without them, it'll run lean. Best overall performance is to get the 4.3 TBI and bore the intake manifold to match. I did it myself by hand, but it might be easier and more effect to take it to a machine shop. Just hand them the TBI gasket for a 4.3 and tell them to bore the holes out to that size.

appreciate the info, quick question though. With the 4.3 tbi will it run to rich and will it be a problem to inspect?

It might be a little richer, but the computer should compensate for the most part. If nothing else, you can adjust the fuel pressure (either with an external regulator or adjusting the one built into the TBI).

No, it won't run too rich with a 4.3 TBI, providing you retain all your stock emissions controls and they're working properly. To that end, you'll want to renew your O2 sensor, clean/service your EGR system while it's apart, and replace your cat if it's original. You're going to want to upgrade the exhaust to a larger size, anyway, to get the best performance out of the bigger motor. The stock exhaust is too small for even a modified 2.8 and it'll strangle a 3.4. BTW you no longer have to "go it alone" when you drill the starter mounting bolts in the 3.4 block, you can buy a drilling jig kit that'll allow anyone with hand-tools experience to do the mod. also, one other question (well im sure there will be more then one) I was thinking of regearing to try and find the 4.77 but do you think the 4.56's will be saficiant with the 3.4 swap?

What size tires are you running or are planning on running? Taller tires will always benefit from lower gearing. But FWIW, I'm running 33s with the stock 4.56s. It's just fine. As soon as (or if I ever get around to it, that is) finish rebuilding the 4.3 TBI and put it on there along with new exhaust, I probably won't worry about gearing. The biggest gain you'd see in gearing (for the trail) would be from new tera low t-case gears. That's where I'm gonna put my money (if I every have enough).

I think that A/C adapter is just for Fiero use, with their rear-mounted motor. All the 2.8 Trooper accessories including the A/C compressor, bolt directly onto a 3.4.
BTW, when you take the A/C compressor off your 2.8, be sure to note the position and thickness of any shims behind its mounting bracket. Years ago there was a TSB regarding serpentine belt wear, and the fix was to shim out the compressor bracket. If you don't reinstall these shims it'll probably mess up the way your belt rides.

im running 33's right now and thats what I will probably stick with. I will wait and see how it runs with the new motor.
what things would you recomend changing if I get a junk yard motor? I was thinking water pump and thermostat, any gaskets that seem to be leaking. Anyhting else that comes to mind that would be easy while the motor is out of the truck?
