Need a Spot
Just finished rebuilding my 4d55 pickup (don't get me started on the difficulty finding parts ) and am having difficulty with starting. I had it running (after some starting fluid) but it would run for about 30 seconds then stall out, as if it had run out of fuel, not just suddenly die. I could restart it almost immediately, but would do it again. I drove it up the street and it died several times in just a couple of blocks. Sure sounds like a fuel issue. Would adding an electric fuel pump to presurize the line help at all? I'm worried about perhaps sucking air from somewhere just using the injector pump to suck the fuel from the tank.

is your pump timing out??? if your pump timing is out it will run like a bag of crap or not even run at all. if you rebuilt your truck yourself I would assume you know what you are doing and that wouldn't be the issue, maybe the injection pump is shot?

Since I didn't touch the pump itself(or the timing) from before the rebuild, I was assuming the timing was OK. However, since it requires a special tool that I can't seem to find, I have no way of adjusting it. This fuel starvation issue (if that is what it really is) just started after the rebuild.

well if when you put the timing belt on..you had the timing mark on the injection pump in the correct spot you shouldn't have to set the timing. but with a new engine you should probably get it checked. a mitsubishi/dodge dealership should be able to do it.

It sound like you have air in the lines to me. Try and bleed the hell out of the system and see if that helps.

Well, I added an electric fuel pump, and it now is running great, although still hard to cold start. I did find my bleed screw on the fuel filter was loose, so that is probably where I was sucking air!

It's raining here in Seattle today, and when I went to the dump to empty the back (been filling it while it was parked) I had trouble keeping traction in the wet roads. Sure running better than before!

Thanks for all the advice...

Final information... Figured out why cold start was so tough. My 3 month old glow plugs were all bad . I must have damaged them while they were out of the head. I tested the old ones and they were all good, so back in they went. Now it starts perfectly!

Again, thanks for all the advice!
